Tutoring Available through our partnership with Gwinnett County Public Libraries:
Beginning this week, Gwinnett students have a new teaching and learning tool available to them… Tutor.com. A partnership with the Gwinnett County Public Library (GCPL) provides online tutoring to students. Live tutoring support is available daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. In addition, students can receive “drop-off- support” 24-7 where they can upload a document for tutor feedback that will be reviewed and returned at a later time.
In order to access the online tutoring service, students will need a library account and gaining access is as easy as 1-2-3.
- Students can use their GCPL library card number to sign in to Tutor.com, OR
- Students who have taken part in the Branch Out program (an existing partnership between GCPS and GCPL) can log in using their Student ID as their Barcode/Username and their birthdate (MMDD) as the Password. (Example: If your birthdate is February 14, your password is 0214.) OR
- If a student does not have an account with the Gwinnett County Public Library, they can go to the GCPS website’s COVID-19 page to find information on how to request one.
Once a student has a GCPL account he or she can get started by going to www.gwinnettpl.org. Click on Tutor.com. Then click on the “Access Tutor.com” button. The student will then create or sign in to their free Tutor.com account. Click on “Get a Tutor Now” to connect and begin getting help. Students can receive one-on-one tutoring in any math, science, social studies, and English subject. Tutor.com covers 40 subjects including Advanced Placement courses. In addition, support is available in Spanish and by phone once a user has logged in.
Family Activities during DLD:
- Looking for ways to learn while also enjoying the great outdoors? Look no further! These hands-on outdoor science projects and activities for kids will help them explore and understand the world around them:
- If you find yourself frustrated trying to keep up with the school packets, video chats, and virtual office hours, take a deep breath and a step back. Official school activities are important, but there are plenty of everyday activities that count as learning too. These kinds of activities have their limits (kids aren’t going to learn calculus from cooking dinner), but overall, you can feel good about kids furthering their learning through these at-home activities.

Weekly Family Engagement Tips-
Get your child excited about museums by taking an online tour of one of the world's great collections. Match your child's interests to the museum. A music lover can check out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at www.rockhall.com. Or go to www.si.edu to explore history, science and culture galore at the many Smithsonian Institution museums. New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art is at www.metmuseum.org.
Help your child feel capable of doing hard things
Some kids are willing to try hard, even if the work is tough. Others give up before they get started. What's the difference? It's the kids who believe in their ability to succeed who stick with it. Tell your child that she has what it takes to do a good job. Then remind her that ability without effort won't get the job done. Encourage her to work hard to reach goals that she has the power to achieve.
Use reading to turn frowns upside down
April is National Humor Month! Give your child a chuckle or two by going online to find funny riddles, comics, stories and poems for children. Take turns reading them out loud to each other. Then, together, try to come up with your own silly poetry and stories. See how corny you can be!
Take precautions when your child plays sports
You don't want your child to be one of the three million kids who get hurt annually playing sports. To promote safety, help your child stay physically fit. Make sure your player knows the basic skills of the sport and wears appropriate protective gear that fits. Have your child drink plenty of fluids and warm up and stretch before playing. And if an injury happens, don't encourage your child to "play through" it.
Don't make these common motivation mistakes
You want to motivate your child to do well academically. But saying the wrong thing can have the opposite effect. For example, avoid threats of punishment ("If you don't do an excellent job, there will be no TV for a month.") Also avoid name-calling and nagging ("You're lazy and you'll never get into college if you don't straighten up!"), and comparisons to other people ("Your brother always got A's. What's wrong with you?").
Can your child detect the mystery word?
The next time you and your child are stuck waiting, play a game of Word Detective. Choose a written word you can see (don't say it out loud), and give your child a clue about it, like "Things you wear on your feet." After she finds the word "shoes," it's her turn to choose a word and give you a clue. You'll have fun and your child will get extra practice recognizing words and phrases. Remove hurtful words from your family's vocabulary
Many parents have rules against swearing, but swear words aren't the only words that hurt. Take your rules a step further and don't allow family members to use insulting words, such as "dumb," "stupid" and "idiot," about themselves or anyone else. Your child will have to get creative to express his frustration, and he may even enlarge his vocabulary!
