GRANGER ELECTIVES
Yesterday (1/23/20), Mr. Davenport came to speak to the 5th graders about their elective options for next year (yes - middle school is coming fast!). Students brought home an information packet about their 4 options. The green cover sheet needs to be returned to school by February 7. Ms. Morgan also sent out an email on Thursday with further information from Mr. Davenport, the principal of Granger Middle School.
ELA
Right now in ELA, we are working on figurative language. We will have a wintery project to share with you at Open House in a few weeks! Our 3rd Quarter Theme is "Courage." The idea of courage is reflected in our Revolutionary War selections (George vs. George and Independent Dames), as well as in our anchor text, The Red Kayak. We will begin reading these wonderful books very soon. If you're wondering about the January book report, we will be combining January and February for a project that we will unveil at Open House! You can help your 5th grader by making sure he/she has an on-level book to read. Ask him/her what they are reading and what they think of it!
MATH
ACCEL: We just finished out unit on algebraic expressions and will be moving on to Unit 5, which covers algebraic equations and inequalities. Just as a reminder, our curriculum is the Common Core State Standards: Grade 6.
REGULAR: Next week, students will continue working on Module 4: Lessons 5-8, which covers the skills of multiplying and dividing with fractions.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Students have started researching their Revolutionary War hero for our projects. In past years, this project was a basic 5-paragraph essay. This year, we are opening up the options on how the students can present their information. A description of these choices will be sent home next week. In the meantime, you can help your 5th grader gather information on their hero. Be sure to keep track of book titles or websites where the information comes from!
