The Cool Spring Times
March, 2020
The Principal's Pen
It seems like we are skipping winter and moving right into spring! Spring knocking on our door means that registration is opening for Kindergarten and Grades 1-5 for the 2020-2021 school year. Please note that students who are already enrolled at CSP will not need to re-register. Online pre-registration is open for all grades; parents may schedule face to face appointments for March 18, 2020 and beyond. A face to face appointment will be required even if families begin the registration process online. For Kindergarten, children who will be five years of age on or before September 30, 2020 are age-eligible for Kindergarten. More details about Grades K-5 registration can be found online at: https://www.lcps.org/StudentRegistration. Families will students entering Kindergarten will also want to make note of Kindergarten Parent Orientation to be held on May 20 at 6:30pm. Interpreters and childcare will be provided during the meeting.
We are also preparing to get information out regarding our inclusive preschool program for the 2020-2021 school year. This four hour a day program includes typically developing four year old students as well as students with disabilities. More information about this program will be forthcoming.
LCPS will be pushing out to all families a technology related survey from BrightBytes around mid March. BrightBytes is a K12 data and analytics company that assists school districts and related businesses in data analysis and planning. The survey will collect information on student/family technology use and skills, perceptions around technology and will be used by LCPS for future technology related decision making.
Cool Spring has our version of March madness- Family Basketball Night! This event will be held March 24 at 6PM at Heritage HS. There will be two games- Fifth Grade Students vs Parents and Fifth Grade Students vs Faculty. The CSP Cheer Squad returns with fun cheers, and there will be spirit items as well as a free throw contest at halftime. All families that attend will also want to be sure to enter to win some cool cash in the 50/50 raffle! Raffle proceeds will go towards the end of year celebration for our departing fifth graders. Families of all grades, as well as CSP alumni are invited to attend! There will also be a pep rally on March 24 at 1:50pm to get us all pumped for the big games!
Fondly,
Chris Cadwell
Principal

Music in Our Schools Month
Greetings from the Music Department! Since 1985, the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) has recognized March as Music In Our Schools Month, making 2020 the 35th nation-wide celebration of how music shapes us as individuals, schools, and communities. NAfME has designated this year’s theme as “Music Changes Lives.” We believe that music has the power to inspire, motivate, connect, and heal, and we see evidence of this in our students every day! Students in each grade will be having lessons and discussions in music class related to this theme, including some personal stories from Mrs. Dickenson’s and Ms. Thompson’s journeys to becoming music teachers. If you are interested in joining in the celebration at home, you can share some of your favorite music with your student and have a discussion about why that music is meaningful or inspiring to you. If you visit Cool Spring during the month of March, you will also be able to see student and staff “Top 5” music playlists displayed throughout the hallways.
Second and third graders will be using March to finish preparing for their grade-level programs. The Multicultural Program will be presented by the second grade on April 1st at 6:30pm. Cool Spring will be hosting its first-ever informance, presented by the third grade on April 22nd at 6:30pm. The informance will give families and friends a glimpse into the process of learning about music as opposed to a concert-like product, and those in attendance may even get a chance to participate in some of our activities! We hope to see you at our upcoming events, and Happy Music In Our Schools Month!
CSP Penguin Yearbooks
Paper order forms are available in the school office.
Be sure to order before April 9, 2020. We do not order extra books for sale at the end of the school year.
Multicultural Night 2020
Please make plans to join us for our Multicultural Night on April 1 at 6:30pm. Come enjoy a great music program by our second grade, and bring a favorite dish to share from your family, culture or county. Families from all grade levels are welcome to come to the program and dinner. The pot-luck dinner will begin at 7pm.
Also, our theme for the evening is 'Postcards from Around the World.' Students will receive a postcard in early March. Students and families are asked to share something about their family's culture, such as celebrations, activities they do together, information about their country, as well as any other special details. We would like all students to complete a postcard and return it to school. School staff will create a large collage with all of the postcards and display it near the end of March.
