Term 4, Week 10
Principal's Report
Year 6 Farewell
What a fabulous night was had by all! Thank you to our Year 6 teachers - Mrs Bailey and Miss Peterie - for their efforts in making this a beautiful night for our students, and to our other staff who stayed at school to help make the evening special.
Staffing - 2021
Due to permanent appointments that have been made this year or are in the process of occurring this week as well as adjustments in funding, we have some changes occurring in our staffing for 2021. While things happen over the holidays to alter personal circumstances, at this point in time, it is also important to note that we are only a few enrolments off a 13th class, which is very exciting and may well change the makeup of our school, which is why I have not listed classes as yet.
2021 Teachers
Mrs Horgan, Mrs Atkins, Mrs Bailey, Mrs Gill, Mr Myers, Mrs Thompson, Ms Kimbell, Miss Peterie, Mrs Rake, Mrs Johnson, Mrs Myers, Miss Rees, Mrs Munro, Mrs Sutton, Miss Symons, Mr Parker, Mrs Rudge. In addition, a permanent teacher will be appointed through merit selection before Christmas.
Farewells
Sadly, we have some staff leaving us, and I would like to say a very big 'thank you' to them here.
Firstly - a very big thank you to Mr Hense, for all of his amazing work in the library and making it into such a dynamic, interesting space that our students love to visit. We all appreciate Mr Hense''s enthusiasm and passion for creating such a wonderful environment to support reading - and indeed, learning! as well as the relationships he has formed with students, families and staff. We wish Mr Hense all the very best as he continues his journey through his Masters and then his future career as a librarian.
Sadly, we are also losing one of our beautiful School Learning Support Officers, Mrs Karen Robb, as she starts a new and exciting journey next year as a School Learning Support Officer at Callaghan College Waratah! Our school has been much richer for having Mrs Robb as part of it - she has brought a wonderful wealth of knowledge and caring to our students and staff over the years. I know our students going to Year 7 at Waratah High will be excited to see you there and we wish you all the very best for the future.
Due to changes in support funding, we also must say goodbye to some of our other wonderful School Learning Support Officers - Miss C, Mrs Tenzin, Ms McCulloch and Mr Ramsey. I would like to thank them for the support they've provided to and connections they've made with both our students and our teachers - it has been very much appreciated. We wish them all the very best for the future.

2021 Kinders - Zoom
As the last part of this term has been quite hectic, we haven't been able to do the in-person forums that we would normally do with our new families coming into our school for the following year.
Myself and the Kinder team will run a Zoom during the school holidays - Kinder 2021 families, please make sure your mobile and email details are up to date before the end of this week so I can send out information about the Zoom. If restrictions ease a little more, we may even be able to conduct an in-person school tour before students return - but we need to be able to contact you to get that underway.
Thank you
Thank you, from me, and on behalf of all of the staff here at MEPS, for your continued support and understanding throughout a very challenging year. I feel that although we may not have seen each other in person as much this year, that our partnership in learning has strengthened and we are working well together as a community to provide the best outcomes for our children. I am excited about what 2021 will hold for our beautiful school community.
I wish you all a wonderful Christmas - I hope that you get to spend lots of quality time with the people who are special to you. May the new year bring you all better times than in 2020.
Stay safe and healthy - I can't wait to see you all in 2021!
Wishing you all the very best for the holiday season :)
Warm regards
Robyn

FROM THE MEPS LIBRARY!
Thank You!: As the year draws to a close I wanted to wish everyone a safe and happy break and all the best in the new year. I'm sure we are all ready to see the end of 2020 with all the challenges it threw at us, from the Covid-19 Pandemic to the destructive bushfire season. There is always a silver lining though and despite the difficulties I was proud to see how it brought out the best in our school community, working together and looking out for each other; and seeing these qualities reflected in our students.
It has been such a privilege to be the Teacher Librarian here at MEPS over the last two years. I have enjoyed every minute of it and its an experience I will never forget!
Unfortunately I won't be in the role for 2021. However I am sure the new librarian will enjoy the job as much as I have and will love reading with and getting to know the MEPS community.
I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone who makes the MEPS library such an exciting, friendly, fun and inclusive space with reading, Lego, gaming, drawing, VR, robotics, music and more on any given day. Whatever our students hobbies and interests, I hope they felt supported to explore them in the library. A big thank you to Claire Bailey for helping facilitate Flo's Book Club and a big shout out to all our book club members; our weekly meetings were a highlight for me. A big thank you to everyone who donated books, supported our book fairs, ordered through Scholastic and participated in Book Week celebrations, particularly our volunteers Sarah Brown and Libby Walsh. Thanks to Kris for all her support and helping me find my way when I started.
I hope you all get a chance to put your feet up, eat a little too much, read a good book and spend time together with your families.
Hopefully see you around in 2021,
Konrad Hense.
Changes to School Bus Services
From Monday 14 December, Week 10 Term 4, there will be improvements to Newcastle Transport regular routes and school service timetables. These changes have been made to improve reliability and better reflect congestion and travel times to get students to and from school in the Newcastle Transport area.
While there have been no changes to dedicated school service routes, some minor adjustments have been made to timetables to better reflect congestion and actual travel times to and from schools around the Newcastle Transport area.
New school service timetables are now available to view online: https://newcastletransport.info/plan-your-trip/school-services/
Students who use regular routes will also need to check their timetables.
Changes apply to the following school routes servicing Mayfield East Public School. Timetables can be viewed here: https://newcastletransport.info/plan-your-trip/school-services/
- 755 – 2 minutes earlier in the morning
ETHICS VOLUNTEERS FOR 2021
We are lucky at MEPS to have a robust ethics program, but we rely heavily on volunteers from the community. You don't have to be a parent, maybe you have grandparents who would like a way to get involved at the school? Training will be happening early next year so please head to https://primaryethics.com.au/volunteer/. If you have any questions, please call Nikki Costelloe (Ethics Coordinator and MEPS Parent) on 0423 415 389.
More information about the classes?
Ethics classes include scenarios, poems and stories, group work and activities to encourage the children to think about what they should do in different situations, about how those circumstances might make a difference and about the consequences of their actions. We hope students will become informed and inquiring adults with the ability to recognise ethical issues and explore them with others in a considered, productive and respectful way. They are encouraged to think about the impact of their actions, not just on the people close to them, but also on the broader community.
