This Man Wants to Give You Money
IndyPL is Wherever You Want to Find Us
Look for the social media icons at the lower right corner of the IndyPl website to find direct links to these.
We also have a Twitter feed with short bits of info about Library stuff.
Then there's the YouTube channel. Those of us who did not win tickets to see Khaled Hosseini speak at the McFadden lecture can watch him interviewed for the Library's TV show.
The Flickr account is loaded with photos of books, library buildings, and kids reading.
IndyPL's Pinterest page has 12 boards to follow. My favorites might be the literary tatoo board, but you all might find the Teen Programming board or Book Quotes more useful.
I just discovered how many RSS feeds we have! If you don't know what they are, check out the RSS page for how to subscribe. If you do know, go to that same page to see how many feeds the Library offers!
Several of our branches also have Instagram accounts. Try following @indycenlibrary to see firsthand why it's such a cool library!
Anyone Need Bookends?
Women's History Month - and Women's History Year Round - Resources
Carrie Waterson, the Web Content Specialist for preschool through 8th grade asked me to let you the Kids’ Blog will have a post each day in March for Women’s History Month. The blog posts rotate through referring readers to eBooks featuring strong female characters, eComics showcasing 10 Featured Scientists from Women’s Adventures in Science http://www.iwaswondering.org/, from the National Academies of Science and Medicine, and online Videos called Career Spotlights from http://kids.usa.gov/.
Besides the blog, Carrie also creates, curates, and cares about pages you can use for readers advisory and getting kids the information they need.
Homework: Women’s History http://www.imcpl.org/kids/blog/?page_id=21770 This page includes web links, links to indyPL Mighty Girl resources and book links to several collected biographies of women that range from sports to art to history to “Rebels” and “Outrageous”...as the saying goes…the ill-behaved ones that make history. ) A link to this page is located under “Homework” on the Kids’ Blog home page.
Read Right Now! Mighty Girl Stories http://www.imcpl.org/kids/blog/?p=21795 Stories to read online – no waiting.
Read Right Now! Mighty Girl Biographies http://www.imcpl.org/kids/blog/?p=21798 Biographies to read online – no waiting. Links to both Read Right Now! pages are located on the eReading Room for Kids page at http://www.imcpl.org/kids/blog/?page_id=20147 as well as on the Women’s History page.
Carrie also created a list of Favorite Mighty Girl Biographies (to clarify…the Read Right Now! list of Biographies above are the kind you can click on and read immediately, no checking out required. The Favorite Mighty Girl Biographies list is a booklist with links to the catalog.)
Reading for Fun and Profit (Pizza, book bucks, etc.)
Carrie Waterson, web content specialist has made a page for all of the promotional reading programs that people can do with their kids at home (or at school). The programs are roughly in order by how they fall in the year. If you know of a program she has missed, please let her know. There are programs for students through age 18 on this list!
Carrie said, " I was kind of amazed after I started to see how many there are. Many of them are during the summer – something to keep in mind when you are talking to people about SRP and encouraging kids/families to read all summer."
The direct link to the page is http://www.imcpl.org/readytoread/?p=9229. To find it in the future, it will be a permanent link on the page “Events for Kids” http://www.imcpl.org/kids/blog?page_id=21059. The link to “Events for Kids” is in the right side navigation of ALL kids’ pages. It is a red calendar image that says, “Events for Kids." It's not hard to miss once you see it the first time!
Announcing the Indiana Bicentennial Poetry Contest
Students 12 and up (and adults, too) can enter a poetry contest for publication in a book celebrating Indiana's Bicentennial. The book will have at least one poem from each of the ninety-two counties and will be published by Brick Street Poetry, Inc. for the Indiana Bicentennial Celebration.
Poems should be no more than 40 lines and can be in any form or in free verse. Please include your name and contact information with your submission. You must be a current resident or have been born and lived here for at least 12 years. You don’t need to be a published poet or someone who writes for a living. Just craft your best poem to celebrate life in Marion County for Indiana’s birthday. Remember, if you need to check facts for your poem, there’s no better place to find the answers than at the library!
Instructions for Librarians
Kindly accept poems submitted in print or digitally. All poems submitted should be sent via library mail to Julia Payton (PDA) on or by April 25, 2015.
Five poems will be forwarded to Brick Street Poetry Inc. by April 30, 2015 and they will make the final decision regarding inclusion in the book.
