PRIDE Day - October 9
This week, we will open our PRIDE activities for the year with our revamped theme: “Together.” While we cannot meet in our houses at this time, the whole school will do activities inside our classrooms. So, to symbolize our different house colors working together this year, we will use multi-colored tie-dye instead of solid colors. Our first activity will be tie-dye masks and will take place Thursday afternoon (remote learners) and Friday (in-person learners.)
Remote Date: Thursday, October 8, 3:45-4:30pm
In-person Date: Friday, October 9 during school hours
Thursday, October 8, students who are new to Heavilin will have their PRIDE house reveal at the end of the day via live streaming. New remote learners, if you do not have your reveal envelope, you can pick it up at the tie dye event on Thursday or it will be in your next material pick-up bag.
Friday, October 9 will be our official PRIDE day. Students are encouraged to wear their house colors on PRIDE days. For this PRIDE day, we will be tie-dyeing, so it is important to wear grubby clothes in case the dye gets messy (even if that means it is not your house colors.)
Remote student tie-dyeing on October 8: park in the back parking lot after 3:40pm and walk past the playground to the north side of the building. We will be set up in the bus turn around area outside. (If it is raining, look for us under the patio.) Please watch the two videos below prior to coming to school on Thursday afternoon (note: some remote students may watch these in zoom with their classes.) We will have all the supplies for you.

Tie Dye Video (8:33)
**In-person learners will watch these videos in class. No need to show them to in-person learners at home.**
PRIDE shirt Orders - Due Sunday, October 4 by 11:59pm
Each year, we offer a special PRIDE shirt for students to order. This is optional. The shirt this year is a multi-colored tie-dye for all houses. We sell it at cost, no profit to us. We are also offering stickers and yard signs this year, at cost. And once again, there is an option for families to donate a shirt. This has been popular in the past, and allows us to give shirts to new students as they arrive throughout the year, as well as students who are not able to purchase their own shirt at this time. The window to order closes on Sunday, October 4 at 11:59pm.

Virtual Art Club with Mrs. Rucklos
Virtual Art Club will be starting October 14th (the Wednesday after fall break). I will be creating a module for each grade level so you will be able to find it in your art canvas course. Anybody is welcome to participate this year since it is virtual but it is completely optional! I’ll keep you updated! - Mrs. Rucklos
From the Public Library
As you probably know, we offer many resources to support your students. However, we are trying to highlight one particularly useful service during this challenging year- free online tutoring!
All students have to do to access free live tutoring services is go to our site for Students and Learning and click on Brainfuse. Then they click Login/Sign up, create a username and password and they are good to go! Tutors are available every day from 2-11 pm. They do not need a library card to use this service. Tutors are available for all grades K-12 and a very wide range of subjects. Spanish-speaking tutors are also available.
Sweater Weather
From our Social Worker, Mrs. Sibray
October is significant for a couple of causes here at school! October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Monday, October 5th is World Day of Bullying Prevention. To show support of bullying prevention, we should #blueup and wear blue! During the month, students will receive information about how to identify bullying and what to do if they see it or feel they have been bullied.
October also includes Red Ribbon Week. We will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week October 26-30 this year. We will have themed days and I will be sending out a newsletter about how to have conversations at home to help your student make good choices and remain drug free. The National theme this year is “Be Happy, Be Brave, Be Drug Free”. Keep watching for more info!
