2nd and 7 Reading/Mentor Initiative
The 2nd & 7 Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Columbus, Ohio. Three former Ohio State University football players, Luke Fickell, Ryan Miller and Mike Vrabel, started the foundation in 1999. Inspired by their involvement in various community outreach programs as student athletes, they decided to continue making a difference by promoting literacy and providing positive role models for children in central Ohio. Since that time, their outreach has grown into a national effort to pay it forward.
The purpose of the 2nd & 7 Foundation is to help promote literacy. The foundation focuses on serving schools where the need is great and on communities where we can make the biggest impact. With that in mind, we created the "Tackle Illiteracy" program.
Student-athletes from universities and high schools across the nation are a huge part of our program. They are out in the schools each week, reading to kids, handing out books, and reminding the 2nd graders why reading is so important. They also use the themes in the Hog Mollies books to reiterate valuable life lessons.
At Otsego, our very own high school athletes come over to the elementary school every 2nd Tuesday of the month to read to our 2nd Graders. The foundation sent us all the books for free, and the students each get to take a copy home. It is a great time, and the students LOVE getting their books "autographed" by the athletes. Tuesday, was our first day of 2nd and 7 for the year, and it was wonderful as always! (Check out the pictures below!)

On Friday, the trailers will be weighed and the school that has collected the most weight will be announced as the winner of that week’s challenge. The winner will receive a $500 scholarship from Goodwill and 13abc! The winner will be announced game day of September 29 between Otsego and Woodmore.
News from Nurse Gray
ATTENTION PARENTS/GUARDIANS:
This year we have the following over the counter medications listed on the enclosed document stocked in each office. Please fill out the form and return to school with your child. We are hoping to cut back on parents needing to bring medication in and/or prevent sending students home. Hopefully this makes it easier on parents, teachers and staff.
Several students have been bringing cough drops with them to school without a note. Students may not take these without written permission from a parent/guardian. We have this listed on the form as well.
MOBILE DENTIST: Once again the mobile dental team is coming in October. A fun, caring group will set up right in the elementary. They will take x-rays, clean your child's teeth, and apply fluoride and sealants if needed. The students love it not to mention the ease and convenience for the parents/guardians. No school missed, no work missed, and teeth are cared for! Available for all students preschool-12th grade. Forms were sent home with students this week.
As always if you have any questions please feel free to call me at 419-823-4381 ext. 4002.
If your phone number has changed and needs to be updated in our system PLEASE call the office with that information. There have been many recent issues where we do not have the right number or it has been disconnected when trying to contact a students parent or guardian. It is crucial that we have a working number in the event of an emergency.
PBIS Rewards - YOU'VE EARNED A SHIELD
This week we also introduced the students to PBIS Rewards. This is an app that allows all our district employees to award "points," which we are calling "SHIELDS," to students when we witness them doing great things and displaying our core values. Staff simply scan the barcode on a students ID and they are instantly given a SHIELD. As students collect these SHIELDS they may use them to purchase items from our rewards store. See an abbreviated list below of the great items available for students to purchase with their SHIELDS.

State Grade Card Information
The 2016-2017 Report Card was released on Thursday. Overall, I am extremely proud of our students and staff for the work that they do every single day. The Otsego Community places an extremely high value on education and expects us to provide a well-rounded experience that prepares students for success in college, career and life. This type of education goes far beyond what is measured by the report cards issued by the Ohio Department of Education, which focus primarily on the results of standardized tests. This information is only a small piece of the puzzle. Testing will never be our sole focus at Otsego, and we will never teach to a test. Our students will always be our number one focus. We cannot solely rely on the data outlined in the state report card to make improvements for a multitude of reasons, and we are constantly working together as a team to ensure positive outcomes for our students. I walk around the buildings every single day, and I am blown away by what our students are learning in our classrooms.

Ag and FFA News
Otsego FFA is a TOP TEN Chapter in the NATION - MODEL OF EXCELLENCE!
We have been selected as a top ten chapter in the nation for the Model of Excellence. This is based on our chapter's top 9 activities in the areas of growing leaders, building our community and strengthening agriculture.
We will be honored at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October.
Three chapter members will present to a panel of judges about our chapter activities and the events in which we participate. We will be highlighted in a 3-minute voice interview on RFD-TB as well (we are not yet sure when this will occur).
Questions or Comments should go to our Program Director Debbie Ayers.
Knight In Shining Armor
Knight In Shining Armor and NHS are collecting donations for school supplies for students who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey. We are still determining details regarding physical donations, but in the mean time, we will be accepting cash donations at the sports pass tables TONIGHT at the football game. All cash donations will go to purchasing school supplies and hygiene items online and helping cover shipping costs to Texas.
Knight in Shining Armor will be participating in TWO movie fundraisers this fall. If you have little ones, save the date the weekend of October 6th-8th. Lionsgate is releasing My Little Pony: The Movie. When you order your tickets through Fandango, $1 from each ticket sale will be donated to the Knight in Shining Armor Fund. Stay tuned for more details to come!
