AVID Scholars Making a Difference!

AVID Elective Scholars answered a request from Maryanne Huck, Military Family Assistance, who spoke to our scholars a couple of weeks ago. The request was to write notes or cards to a Vietnam Veteran who will be going on the Honor Flight in a couple of weeks. This veteran did not have anyone to write letters thanking him for his service and bravery for the "Mail Call" on the flight home, so AVID scholars wrote and decorated notes for him. A few samples of their work are below.

Such an honor to work with these scholars!

Best Buddies Match Party

On October 29th we had our Buddy Match Party. We are so excited to have the students meet their Buddy and start planning meeting times together. At the party, parents were able to learn more about the Best Buddies Chapter. Students enjoyed snacks, painting pumpkins and getting to know each other. Our next meeting will be after school on Wednesday, November 13th from 2:45-3:45. We will be planning our December Holiday Party and creating T-Shirt designs.

Dance Troupe

Dance Troupe has begun! We meet every Thursday after school to explore, learn, and create different dance styles. The first style we learned was Dancehall. Students were taught a little history of Dancehall, learned a routine, and even choreographed. Now we are working on learning a variety of popular dance moves and styles through the decades. The dancers are learning a routine that teaches them moves from 1965 to 2020! We are excited to see what great things this group will accomplish in the future.

Did you know that your student has the ability to search and hold books from our district libraries from anywhere, on any of your devices? Just go to https://waukesha.follettdestiny.com or have them use the app on their ipad called "Horning Destiny" that takes them directly to this site! Click on "Catalog" to search for a book or another resource. If you would like to place a hold on a book or to view your own account, you just need to be logged in first. You will see “Log in” in the upper-right hand side of your screen. Use the same username and password that you use for your other accounts in the district.

Academic and Career Planning (ACP) Reminder!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you about the Academic and Career Planning (ACP) process. Our mission in Waukesha is to develop in our students the capacity to be college, career, and community ready. The primary goal of Academic and Career Planning is to produce responsible graduates who will begin their adult life with the knowledge, skills, motivation, and a self-directed plan for career and lifelong success.

Academic and Career Planning is an ongoing process for students in grades 6-12. At each grade level, students will receive learning experiences focused on academic and career planning geared for their level with guidance from teacher mentors, counselors, peers, families and the community.

Each year students will set, reflect, and revise their goals within their personal Academic & Career Plan. Student goals and plans are expected to change annually based on their personal experiences. Students use a platform called Xello to assess themselves as learners, investigate and explore various pathways careers and post high school options.

We encourage families to review your student’s Xello profile together as this can be a great way to start a conversation around their goals as they relate to academic, career, and personal goals. As exploration is a key focus of Academic and Career Planning process, you may not see a clearly identified career focus, the reflection and conversation that occurs as a result may be essential in the shaping of your student’s future goals.

In Xello, students have the option to generate a shareable link to their profile, which they can use to connect with friends, mentors, and more. Students can also share this link with their parents, who can then view their child’s profile without needing a username and password. Sit with your student and complete the following steps:

  1. On any page in Xello, from the top right corner, students click their avatar and select Share your profile.
    * Or, from beneath their name on the About Me page, students click Share your Profile to open a preview of their shareable profile.

  2. From the top right corner of the profile, students click Share.

  3. From the Share Your Profile window, switch the toggle to ON to get a shareable link.

  4. Students can copy and share the link with parents or other people with whom the student wants to share their Xello profile.
Note: A unique URL is created when the user turns on the share option. It does not exist until that happens. There is no way to access the profile until this link is activated by the student. The student can also turn the link off.

The school district website will contain other information and resources related to Academic and Career Planning. If you have any questions regarding Academic Career Planning, please contact your school counselors.

Thank You
