SPANISH IN THE 19th CENTURY
ECONOMY AND INDUSTRIALISATION
The Indrustial Revolution was late and slow only in Basque Country, Catalonia and the large cities. Most of the population worked in fields. England and Germany used machinery. Railway didn´t appear until the second half of the century. Steam locomotive and steaship became the main forms of transport. The first train line between Barcelona and Mataró until 1848.
SOCIETY
Bourgeoisie became rich, became the dominant social class. The Industrial Revolution brought serious social problems: harsh working conditions, chil explotation. In rulal areas, the peasant lived in extreme poverty. Were Political demands of the working. New social classes and bourgeoisie lived in well-kept modern beighbourhoods called ensanches. The poor neighbourhoods with bad living conditions. The poorest lower classes lived in factories. The coal caused serius pollution.
ART AND CULTURE
Artistic styles emerged over the century. The majority of the population was illiterate.
ROMANTICISM
At the beginning of the century. This style reflected the revolutionary atmosphere and faraway places.
REALISM
At the middle of the century. Writters and painters decided to show the most aspects of the industrial society.
IMPRESSIONISM
At end of the century. Painters were influenced to technological advances on their work.
GENERATION OF "98(LA GENERACION DEL 98)
Formed why a group of writers and intelectuals who criticised Spanish society called modernisation.
SCIENTIFIC ADVANCES
Several researchers and scientific advances, for example;Ramón y Cajal received the first Nobel Prize for Science.
