Fall is going to be Fantastic!
Are you like me? Fall is my favorite time of year for many reasons. One of those reasons is that it brings to life the best part of the country club experience. Tremendous golf conditions, social activities for both adults and families combined, and much more. I hope that all of our members take advantage of the many and varied opportunities that Alvamar offers this fall season. Be sure and enjoy Friday night bounty or a gourmet dinner this fall. Those are two of our ongoing events that really bring people together for a night of fellowship and fun. We will also be holding our annual KU Football tailgate during the TCU game on November 15th. You don’t have to have tickets to the game to enjoy this great event. Free food and drink and KU excitement all provided by the club; what could be better than that? These fun events plus the upcoming events planned by the Family and Social committee’s should make fall 2014 one of our best seasons yet at Alvamar.
It should also be mentioned that continued improvements to golf course bunkers will be ongoing this fall and the parking lot has seen some recent repairs to improve its condition. We are also in the midst of planning many corporate Christmas parties so be sure and contact the club to schedule your company’s Holiday gathering.
I want to again thank all of the member’s at Alvamar for allowing me to have the greatest job in all of Lawrence and I look forward to the remainder of the year at Alvamar.
Fairways & Greens,
Bryan Minnis
A letter from Greg Moore..
This time of year always brings change. The leaves begin to turn, the days get shorter, there could be a frost delay any given morning and you may need to club up on your approach shot. However, in our case this year there is change on the horizon. See the problem with change is you don’t always know what is on the other side. Having been a kid that moved 9 times and attended 8 different schools systems, I have become accustomed to change. With that I will leave you with a bit of advice that my father gave me. When I would get nervous or discouraged about moving or attending a new school he would say “Greg, bet on what you know”. Meaning, you can only count on yourself and you can’t worry about the things that are out of your control. So with that I would say as members of Alvamar, with this possibility of change coming, let’s bet on what we know. Alvamar is an incredible place to belong to, play golf, socialize and entertain friends and family. The staff members are great, from the greens keepers to wait staff. These past several years we have had great leadership and have made progress on course conditions and the clubhouse. So while change may be coming, let us remember that it is the membership, staff and leadership that make Alvamar what it is today.
This all being said, Alvamar still needs you. We have several upcoming vacancies on our committees. The Social Committee has four positions coming open, the Family Committee has one opening as of today, and the Alvamar Ambassadors is always looking for energetic people who want to get involved. If you would like to get involved or just visit one of these committees let myself or Bryan Minnis know. As always, I hope to see you at the “Place to Play”.
Cheers!
Greg Moore

SALE, SALE, SALE!!!!!!!!!
Guess what everyone, Alvamar is having a SALE. All sale items will be located in the Championship Golf Shop and will range from 25% to 50% of the “Retail Price”. What will be on sale you might ask yourself, many of our brands of shirts for men and women, some outerwear, and most of the 2014 equipment. So, if you have some credit to burn, birthday money to spend, doing some early Christmas shopping, or had your eye on something new but could not bring yourself to buy it in season, stop by the Championship golf shop and see all the sale has to offer.
As we move into the fall, some people look south for warmer climates to vacation and play in the sun warmth. However, heading out on a cool day for 9 or 18 is a wonderful way get some exercise before old man winter forces us inside. Also, remember that we have a wonderful practice facility that you can tune up for that warm weather golf trip and/or to keep your swing grooved until the weather breaks. As we all know, we still have warm patches that will pop up during the late fall and winter months.
I would like to congratulate all the ladies who played in the 25th editions of the Quail Classic!!! Being the “Silver Anniversary” there was a wonderful turn out. In my perspective every member and guest had a wonderful experience and that is what is the most important to us as a staff.
From now until the end of the year Oct 3 is the only date that has an event on the Member’s Course. The 8th annual Spurling Scramble will be held that morning with proceeds from the tournament benefit all law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel in Douglas County through SAFE, Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment, which provides funds to families of police and fire personnel killed in the line of duty.
As a golf and country club that holds so many fundraising events we are able to touch many lives and charities in the community. As the membership you are very gracious in allowing Alvamar to be such a part of the charitable efforts of the community and by proxy you become part of that effort. Alvamar is woven into the fabric of the community and has been by efforts of staff and member alike. Thank you for the support and patience with all of the outside events this year on both the Championship and Member’s Courses.
October Updates...
-Paul Hooser-
If everything could finish up like a golf season does. October in our part of the country is the best for golf. We benefit from moderate temperatures, great course conditions and beautiful scenery with the colorful explosion of the trees. We can always count on the golf conditions to be fantastic in October.
Hopefully your personal golf will finish as strong as the weather. How did your season go? Did you play as often or as well as you had hoped? The Championship Course will host a Titleist Vokey Wedge day on October 8. There will be two sessions available on the eighth, one at 11:30 and one at 5:30. The regional Titleist representative, Chad Homsey will provide us with an array of Vokeys in different lofts, grinds and bounces. Which is golf speak for lots of options. The schedule for the sessions will include instruction from Alvamar professionals, Eric Magnuson and Paul Hooser on playing the wedge around the green, in the bunker and up to seventy yards from the flag. In addition each participant will be fit for a Titleist wedge of their loft choice. The fee of $150 covers the wedge and all the instruction. Contact Paul at 785842-1907 or phooser@alvamar.com to get signed up today.
October: Tee to Green
Tee to Green
October 2014
By Kent Morgison
As the month of October unfolds, I believe it is still one of the best months for golf in our area. The weather, although cool at times, is generally quite pleasant, and the Kansas landscape begins to show off its autumn colors to the fullest. A couple of things that will occur during the month that may affect your round should be noted at this time. October will take our zoysia fairways into dormancy for the winter, and we will most likely get our first frost of the season. How does this affect you and your round of golf?
When the zoysia begins to go dormant, we will implement our long-standing policy of keeping carts on the path throughout the winter. This minor inconvenience has played a vital role in allowing our fairways to endure the tough Kansas winters, as cart traffic and wear patterns on dormant zoysia have been shown to make for less than favorable playing conditions now and going forward as they transition out of dormancy next spring. Your understanding and adherence to this policy is greatly appreciated by your fellow members and your maintenance department.
Also, there will undoubtedly be a few frost delays if you are an early riser for your round of golf. Traffic on cool season turf that has a layer of frost on it can severely damage the plant by killing the plant tissue as the ice inside the plant punctures the cell walls. This will result in tan leaf tissue where the traffic has passed. Please be patient as mother nature does her work in melting off the frost on those crisp fall mornings, your turf thanks you.
Lastly, for those of you with outdoor patios or fireplaces, we have a decent supply of firewood from the last couple of years, with more to come this year. If you are in need of some firewood for a reasonable price, feel free to call us at 785-843-6303.
