Parent Newsletter - January 2023
Principal’s Message
Hello Knight Families,
Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed a pleasant holiday season. We are pleased to welcome students back to the Castle, as we have much to accomplish in the month of January. Please check this edition of the Knightly News for more information on SOLs taking place from January 13-19. Students who ride the bus will also need to check information regarding second bus runs for the days they are not required to take an SOL.
Final exams will take place on January 25-26 for all 4x4 courses. Please click here for the exam schedule and here for exam exemption criteria. January 27 marks the end of Term 1 and Semester 1. I would encourage you to discuss your student’s progress with them to ensure they finish the term and semester strong.
It is time for our 9-11 grade students to begin thinking about courses for the 23-24 school year. As a reminder, the Kellam Course Registration Hub is now live. Please chat with your student about their course selections for next year. Additional information about the course registration process went out in a Parent Square Alert message on January 4. Please check your email to review the essential steps included. Course request changes may not be considered after June 30, 2023.
January 16-20 is Student Activity Coordinators Appreciation Week! We want to give a huge shoutout to Ms. Amy Pratt and her team, who work diligently to keep all events running smoothly at Kellam High School. Amy is assisted by Jeff Hudson, Alex Raidl, Ross Benzel, and Jason Copeland. Please be sure to show them some love when you see them at the next event you attend.
I look forward to seeing you at many of our winter athletic, academic, and performing arts events.
Sincerely,
Dr. Ryan Schubart
Principal

Culturally Speaking: Recognizing the power of your VOICE
Instant Messages vs. Speech.
Which one holds a greater power? How often have you received a phone call and said or heard, “It is so nice to hear your voice.” Research tells us that hearing happiness in the voice of another makes us pay more attention than even hearing the joy in our voice. Voices we are familiar with engage the higher-order responses that reflect their importance to us through social salience. Furthermore, Voice Perception studies indicate hearing a voice conversation versus a text conversation reduces our blood cortisol, a stress marker, and heightens the release of oxytocin, the feel-good hormone.
So how do you connect through your voice?
Voice can awaken the senses and lead others to act, securing a successful job at an interview, closing deals, or defending your thesis/dissertation. Voice conveys passion and excitement. It can also convey anything, whether it’s a feeling, a place, or an idea. Voice transports us and creates endless possibilities, opportunities, and perspectives. No two voices are the same; each voice has something different to say. How can we encourage others to unite and support each other? How can we pay closer attention to our voice and be more aware of how our tone and words may impact our listeners? In the words of Martin Luther King, Jr.:
“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”
