And the award goes to...
Award season is upon us. In the midst of nominations for best picture, best actor, and best dressed, let's not forget the most important awards: the children's literature awards--John Newbery Medal, Pura Belpré Award, Coretta Scott King Book Awards, and Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award. These highly prestigious awards in the world of children's literature not only heighten title and author popularity, but also secure a spot in the world of publishing--the title will indefinitely be in print for generations to come. The 2016 winners are:
- John Newbery Medal: Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña
- Pura Belpré Award: Enchanted Air: Two Cultures, Two Wings: A Memoir by Margarita Engle
- Corretta Scott King Book Award: Gone Crazy in Alabama by Rita Williams-Garcia
- Robert F.Sibert Information Book Medal: Funny Bones: Posada and His Day of the Dead Calaveras by Duncan Tonatiuh

Event Information
Julia Alvarez visits Unity Junior High
Author Julia Alvarez will honor us with her presence on Monday, March 21st. Throughout Alvarez's work, the theme of being caught between two cultures is strong. Although she focuses heavily on the Latino experience and assimilation, anyone from anywhere can connect to the characters in Alvarez's stories. With two Pura Belpré Awards for Return to sender and Before we were free, and several honorable mentions, it is an honor to have Julia Alvarez visit Unity Junior High School.
