Frontier Airlines' new flight cancellation and refund policy explained
Within the past week, Frontier Airlines changed its flight cancellation and refund policy from 24 hours to 48 hours. This change upset some customers and caused others to wonder why the airline chose to do so and what this means for them as passengers on Frontier airlines flights. Here's how you can expect Frontier's new flight cancellation and refund policy to affect you and what the airline has to say about it all.
How to know if you are eligible for a cancelation
Frontier will allow a cancelation to be made within 24 hours of your original flight time, free of charge. If you change your plans after that window, you may still be able to get out of your ticket for a small fee. Before cancelling frontier flight, though, make sure that there’s no other route or mode of transportation you can take—you can search for any available alternate flights online (and on apps like Hipmunk) before deciding. Also, double-check to see if your reason qualifies for a full or partial refund—refund rules vary by airline and are often very complicated. As always, give customer service a call before booking so you can clarify all rules and fees in advance.
How to know if you are eligible for a refund
Customers on Frontier's A320 family aircraft (A319, A320, A321) with flights that are cancelled and where it was determined by Frontier after a reasonable period of time that they would not be provided alternate transportation to their final destination within one hour of their original scheduled arrival time will receive a full refund. Customers booked on A320 family aircraft flights that are cancelled due to weather or diverted to an airport other than their original destination will also receive a full frontier airline refund policy. Please note: Customers may request refunds for multiple bookings made over several days but must wait at least 24 hours between cancellations. In addition, customers must wait at least 12 hours between requests made over different reservations numbers.
What this change means
Frontier Airlines recently announced that, starting in March of 2018, it will change its policy for passengers who want to cancel or reschedule their flights. Currently, Frontier customers receive a credit toward future travel when they cancel or rebook their flights on Frontier airlines. However, as of March 21st, that credit will become a fee: $75 for domestic flights (plus any taxes) and $125 for international fares (plus government taxes). If a customer chooses to take Frontier's offer instead of waiting for better travel weather, they may be able to travel between 28-60 days out from their original departure date - depending on their fare type. A $100 per-person nonrefundable convenience fee is also required if you would like to change your reservation within 24 hours before your frontier airlines scheduled flights at departure time.
FAQs regarding the change
What is Frontier’s new flight cancellation/refund policy? On March 27, 2017, Frontier announced that it was updating its standard cancellation and change policies. Specifically, in addition to increasing its standard change fee from $100 to $200 for most fare types, Frontier also stated that it would no longer allow free Frontier airlines cancellations or changing flight for tickets issued on or after April 8, 2017 for travel dates on or after May 21, 2017. The announcement did not impact tickets issued before April 8. However, according to a recent update from Frontier, if you purchased your ticket prior to 4/8/17 but have not yet flown, you may cancel your reservation without penalty up until 4/15/17. We have reached out to Frontier for clarification regarding whether customers who purchase tickets on or after April 8 will be eligible for refunds if they cancel their reservation prior to flying. It appears that customers who purchased their ticket prior to April 8 will still be able to make one change per ticketed itinerary at no charge until May 21 (the date of the last departure under Frontier's old policy). So what does all of this mean?
