A Note from Mr. Bender
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Kids Heart Challenge Fundraiser. We appreciate your support. The fundraiser continues next week. If you have any questions, please reach out to our P.E. teacher, Blake Watson, for more information.
February 7-11 is School Counselor Appreciation Week! We are thankful for our two wonderful counselors, Ms. O'Rear and Mrs. Woodworth. We appreciate all they do for the students, staff, and families at WMES.
Next week is also Random Acts of Kindness Week. Our counselors have "Thank You" stations set up throughout the school for our students to write notes of kindness or appreciation to others. We encourage parents to have discussions with your child(ren) about ways to spread kindness at home, at school, and within the community.
Thank you for your continued support!

Character Trait and Mindfulness Activity of the Month
Every month, we focus on a character trait to instill great character into our cubs. The character trait for the month of February is Kindness. Kindness means going out of your way to do things that will help others or make them feel better. As a reminder, teachers will be choosing one student this month who has exhibited citizenship the most to represent his/her class as the Cub of the Month.
Random Acts of Kindness Week is February 7-11th! Students will be encouraged to complete acts of kindness at school as we “throw kindness around like confetti”! There will also be a “Thank You Station” available during arrival for students to write thank you cards to staff in the building. You can challenge your child to display random acts of kindness at home too!
2022 Georgia Picture Book Nominee Spotlight
Home in the Woods by Eliza Wheeler
During the Great Depression six-year-old Marvel, her seven siblings, and their mother find a tarpaper shack in the woods and, over the course of a year, turn it into a home. The story is based on the childhood of the author's grandmother. This nominee highlights the character traits of resilience and resourcefulness.
Reading Rewards
February reading logs were sent home in the February 4th weekly folders. Be sure to read and log your minutes throughout the month!
If you lose your log or find you need a replacement, monthly logs can be downloaded and printed from the media center link of the school website. Look for the Reading Rewards link on the left side of the media center website.
Monthly logs should reflect 20 different dates in the month, with at least 20 total minutes of reading for each date. Incomplete logs will not be accepted. Students can read independently or with their parents at home. After completing the monthly requirement, logs are returned to the homeroom teacher. Parent initials are required in order to verify the reading.
If you have any questions about the Reading Rewards program, refer to the reading rewards link on the media center page of the school website or contact Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org.
