Benvolio

People should be honest because it will better for them.

Act 1, Scene 1

In the begging of the play there is a fight going on in the streets between the Montagues and the Capulets. The prince then arrives and the fight ends. The prince then starts to ask people how the fight started and he ask Benvolio. Then Benvolio replies, "And yours close fighting ere I did approach. I drew to part them. Benvolio is telling the truth when he says this because he really did try to break up the fight before it started. This is relevant to the theme because Benvolio is honest every time someone asks him something and this is why Prince Escalus asked him first.

Act 3, Scene 2

In act 3 there is another fighting between Mercutio and Tybalt and Mercutio dies. Once Romeo finds out that he was killed he becomes furious and goes and starts a duel with Tybalt. Tybalt ends up dying during the fight. Benvolio witnessed the whole thing and again is asked by the prince of what happened. He begans to explain what happen and who killed Tybalt: "Tybalt, here slain, whom Romeo hand did slay. This is relevant to the theme because although Romeo is one of Benvolios best friends he still told the truth knowing that it could get Romeo in trouble.

Act 3, Scene 2

After the fight between Romeo and Tybalt, Benvolio is telling the prince what happened and who started the fight. He says that Tybalt was the one who started the fight and the one who killed Mercutio, this makes the Capulets mad because Benvolio is a Montague and they think he is just saying it so that his friends won't get in trouble. Benvolio then says, "This is the truth, or let Benvolio die." (1050) This is relevant to the theme because Benvolio is telling the truth and because he is the prince trusts him the most out of all the people there.

Act 5, Scene 3

At the end of the play, Romeo and Juliet have both killed themselves because they can't be together and Friar Lawrence is the only one who knows. The watchmen then come and both families and even the prince comes. Friar Lawrence then explains the whole story and takes all the blame: "Miscarried by my fault let my old life be sacrificed." (1101) The prince then says that the friar will not be killed because of his honesty and because he is a holy man. This shows that being honest is the best thing to do because is the friar lied he man have been killed.
