Celebrating Differences
Easter is on Sunday, with Good Friday starting tomorrow. Passover begins tomorrow and ends on the 23rd. In addition, Ramadan began April 1 and ends May 1 with a celebration called Eid al-Fitr. At Glacier Ridge, we have students and families celebrating each of these traditions. It has been fascinating listening to the students talk and learn about the different traditions that their families participate in. Some students are participating in Lent, while others are fasting during the day for Ramadan.
Talking about traditions, celebrations, holidays, and family beliefs is a way that GRE celebrates and appreciates differences. By providing a safe space without judgment, students are excited to share about themselves and their families. It also helps other students understand the traditions of other families.
Feeling different is a lonely, isolating, and scary feeling for a child. Our goal is to help students feel included and connected to others at school. Our initiative of Start with hello > Find a connection > Start a friendship helps build conversation skills in students to find connections and interact with others that are different from them. They often realize that we are ALL different from one another. However, we often ALL have something in common as a connection.
Enjoy the upcoming celebrations this weekend and month, in whatever capacity you may celebrate.
Thanks,
Pete Kurty, Ed. D
Principal
GRE ANNOUNCEMENTS
Volunteer Appreciation 2022
We are fortunate to have many amazing volunteers at GRE. Everything you do, big and small, make such a difference. If you have volunteered in any capacity this school year, please join us for our Volunteer Appreciation event on Thursday, April 28 from 10-10:45 AM. Coffee and donuts will be served; along with performances and creations from students. RSVP is not required, but it is helpful. If you plan to attend, please email frazier_jenny@dublinschools.net .
Reading Garden and Outdoor Classroom
Through generous donations from the GRE PTO, Ahlum and Arbor Tree Preservation, Scotts Lawn, and Dublin Education Foundation, we are growing our reading garden and outdoor classroom.
The reading garden is an outdoor space to read in comfortable chairs at recess or after school. The space includes a free library with available books to borrow. You can also donate your books to the reading garden.
It is also an outdoor area where teachers can bring their entire class and teach outside in the fresh air. The space includes adirondack chairs and stumps to sit on.
Most recently, students assisted Mr. JP, our head custodian assembling some of the 10 chairs donated by the Dublin Education Foundation.
DCS Dodgeball
The Dublin City Schools Dodgeball tournament is Friday, May 13th at 7pm at Dublin Coffman High School. We will hold a school tournament at GRE on Friday, April 29th to determine who will represent our school at the district tournament.
Dr. Kurty will randomly pull names from a hat to create the teams. Each team will consist of 4 boys or 4 girls. Girl teams will play against each other and boy teams will play against each other.
The winner of the girl’s tournament and the winner of the boy’s tournament will combine to form a team of 8 players. The team of 8 (4 boys and 4 girls) will represent GRE at the district tournament on Friday, May 13th.
Although there is an element of competition with this event, it is designed to be fun and to benefit charity. It is imperative that, throughout the process, we uphold the choose kind motto to ourselves, our teammates, and to others. We encourage participants to have fun, but keep the true meaning and importance of the event in the forefront.
This year, all proceeds will benefit Honor Flight and we will be sponsoring Honor Flight for our veterans on June 2nd.

Volunteering & Background Check Information
As we start to have volunteers in the building and at school events again, it is important to know the volunteer and background check procedures. As a Volunteer, Do I Need to Complete a Background Check?
You WILL NOT need a background check if you:
• Are in the presence of a Dublin City Schools employee while with students
• Volunteer to help with a class party or other one time events
• Sell tickets at a school event (athletics, drama, etc.)
• Volunteer in the office
• Make copies or perform duties/special projects for the school
You WILL need a background check if you:
• Will be working with students while not in the presence of a Dublin City Schools employee
• Volunteer in a classroom, the cafeteria, or on the playground on a recurring basis
• Attend school field trips, band camps, etc.
• Are a volunteer coach
Click HERE to begin the background check process. It only takes 5 minutes. If you have gone through the online BIB Background check process and have received your personalized identification card, we would like you to start wearing it when volunteering at GRE. Please stop by the GRE Office to pick up a badge holder and clip for your volunteer badge and you can wear that instead of a volunteer sticker.
If you have not gone through the background check process, please consider taking a moment to do this at
