Keeping up with the UH medical school in 2019
JABSOM grad and now "Obama Leader"
Dr. Leanne Kealoha Fox received her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from JABSOM in 2017, where she specialized in clinical research. She was recently announced by the Obama Foundation as one of 22 emerging leaders in the Pacific-Asia region. Dr. Fox introduced the former President at the exclusive Asia-Pacific Program Design Conference held at the UH East-West Center on Jan. 6, 2019.
“The world will never know what this experience meant to me, given the honor to provide a speech and introduce President Barack Obama! As a proud JABSOM alum and current faculty, mentoring 10 Native Hawaiian students, I’m proud to be a University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa success story.”
New “Our Care, Our Choice” law prompts education sessions for MDs and caregivers statewide
Dr. Steven Pantilat, a visiting professor from California, where physician-assisted suicide has been legal since 2016, shares his experiences in related to medical aid in dying and how to better communicate with seriously ill patients about all of their options at the end of life. Several continuing medical education courses will be offered to health care professionals:
- Jan. 19 from 8:00 am – 11:30 am at the UH Cancer Center and provided by the Hawai’i Society of Clinical Oncology. See details on their website.
- Feb. 1 from 1:00 pm – 4:45 pm at The Queen’s Medical Center. Contact them to register at cme@queens.org.
- Feb. 2 from 9:00 am – 12:45 pm at UH JABSOM, room 314. Register through email to Crystal Costa.

1st International Translational Medicine Conference in Hawaiʻi brings together scientists from China, US, Europe, India, Mexico, Korea
