Fleming's cold weather policies
As we enter the colder weather we just wanted to remind all families of the guidelines for winter gear. If the temps are below 55 degrees you need long sleeves. If the temps are below 45 you need a coat. If the temps go below 0 (with or without windchill ) we do not go outside.
Once the snow comes we are staying with the parameters of....
1. If you have snow pants and boots you have full access to the playground and field.
2. If you have only boots you can stay on the mulch or blacktop.
3. If you have no boots you have to stay on the blacktop
* It's very helpful when student's outerwear is labeled, to avoid it making it to lost and found*
MLK Dismissal Times
MLK is an early dismissal day for all students in the EWSD school district. Fleming will be out by 12:00 pm. Buses will still be an option, and will be on the same route schedule leaving Fleming by 12:30 depending on which bus.
News from Our Neighbors
The time has come to contact you about an existing problem: Fleming School parents are dropping off/picking up their kids in the street on Prospect Street across from the school.
Neighbors report that In addition to the tracks, I have also seen this activity in progress. A few weeks ago, I witnessed a parent doing this - they clearly had a plan with their student for end of school. The parent pulled off to the side of prospect (onto our lawn,) the student then ran out, darted across the street in traffic, got in the car, and then they drove away.
If I am reading the street signs on Prospect correctly, this is also illegal during the 2-3:30 PM timeframe.
In addition to the possible damage to neighbor's lawns, there is a clear safety issue with doing this for parents and students. The fact that many drivers roll through the stop sign at the top of Hillcrest doesn't make this situation any safer. (I have gotten some help from the Essex PD on this issue.)
We would appreciate your help and pick up cooperation on making this parental behavior stop.
PBIS News
The PBIS team at Fleming is committed to supporting students by focusing on the positive. PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. We have chosen the 4 Fleming Fundamentals of Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible as a way to focus our “ rules” on the positive. We then can acknowledge students for positive behaviors that fall under any of these important fundamentals. Focusing on the positive improves the classroom environment and allows for teachers to prioritize instructional time, rather than misbehaviors. It also supports the classroom environment by creating clear expectations for students. Believe it or not, students need instruction and reminders about expectations for things like walking in the halls, behaving appropriately at lunch, lining up, playground behavior, classroom transitions, and more. PBIS encourages teachers to actively teach expected behaviors and reinforce positive ones. Using the Fleming Fundamentals as the expectations schoolwide, and clearly defining what that looks like and sounds like in different parts of our school day, supports the students in knowing what is expected of them.
.
As you know, students earn “Falcon Feathers” when they are acknowledged for their positive behaviors. Students love to fill up the nest in their classrooms each day and count how many feathers they have collectively earned both for the class and the school! It’s extra exciting this month knowing that each time we earn an egg, we’re also raising money for Essex Chips and the Tween Center. Ask your child if they have earned any feathers this week!
November of course, is a month of giving and a month focused on gratitude. This month, our PBIS theme is “giving.” One way classrooms are connecting to this theme is by sharing ways that they have helped someone through giving. Another way is through the school food drive. All classrooms are collecting items to donate to Aunt Dot’s place - the local food shelf. The 3rd way is through donating money to Essex Chips with each “egg” the school earns. As you can see, PBIS at Fleming also brings us together as a whole school community in many ways.
