Carpool Drop Off
Please remember that cars should not be turning left into Bluff Park Elementary School Monday - Friday between the hours of 7:00-8:30 AM and 2:00-3:30 PM We have several safety concerns and the primary area of concern is the old BPES semicircle lot. If you are utilizing the old lot, you must park your car in a parking space, and walk your child down the sidewalk near the marquee. The resource officer is located at the crosswalk and will assist as needed. Students should not be dropped out of the car, and cars should not pull to the side. A parking space should be utilized. Please be sure to pull into this area from the entrance closest to our building as it is a one-way road. We also have parents dropping their students off in the middle of Park Avenue. All of these issues are huge safety concerns, and I have asked the HPD to monitor this area and notify administration of future occurrences. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students safe!
Flu Season
We are approaching flu season. Currently our school is not seeing many cases of the flu. However, we have started monitoring numbers daily. Please partner with us, as you monitor your children when they have symptoms of illness, to be sure that they do not attend school while they have fever. Common flu symptoms include:
Fever or feeling feverish/chills.(Temp of 100.0 or above)
Cough.
Sore throat.
Runny or stuffy nose.
Muscle or body aches.
Headaches.
Fatigue (tiredness)
Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
.
The Alabama Department of Public Health urges the general public to follow these actions to avoid getting and spreading the flu:
* Stay at home if you have a fever, and for at least 24 hours post fever without fever-reducing
* Wash your hands often
* Cover your cough and sneeze
* Clean and disinfect your environment
* Consider getting the flu vaccine
Parents, please notify the school nurse if your child has been diagnosed by a physician with the flu. You may call the Health Room at 439-2830 or email Nurse Melanie at mjourdan@hoover.k12.al.us to report any cases.

¡Hola y Feliz Año Nuevo! My 3rd, 4th and 5th grade amigos participated in a movie talk in class about a fox (zorro) and a chicken (pollo). We also reviewed numbers 0-30 by tossing a ball. My Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade amigos learned a little about El Día de los Reyes Magos which fell on January 6th and playing a game of ¿Dónde está el niño? behind some ‘roscas’ or wreaths of bread 1-12.
Our ‘frase de semana’ is ‘Lo siento’ [loh-see-ehn-toh] which means ‘I’m sorry’.
Please feel free to contact me anytime with any questions or concerns.
Gracias for all you do,
Profesora Melany Gaines

We are still learning about the Zones of Regulation. The kids are really picking it up and having fun with it. We are really working on the red zone and what gets us in the red zone. Once we have our list of things or problems that get us in the red zone we discuss what size the problem is by using bowling pins. 3-5 grade has had great discussions this week on determining what is a 4 pin problem vs a 3 or 2.
4 Pin Problem-Huge Problem (Red Zone)
3 Pin Problem- Large (Red Zone)
2 Pin Problem- Medium (Yellow Zone)
1 Pin Problem- Small (Yellow Zone)
Gutter Ball- No Problem (Green Zone)
The rest of the month we are going to be discussing different coping strategies or calm down techniques. Attached here is a list of coping strategies to use at home and a journal to talk and rate how each strategy works.
