hip news
Health Information Project, or HIP, is a revolutionizing health education program that transforms junior and senior high school students into teachers. HIP creates traditional health classes with a peer-to-peer model. Peer health educators teach ninth grade students about physical and mental health topics to bring about discussion about matters that are commonly overlooked. Students are taught how to cope with anxiety, help a friend with depression, to report sexual assault, and to support a bullied classmate.
Recently, Riviera Preparatory was selected as having one of the best HIP programs run by advisor Ms. Fernandez. In turn, this group of students were selected to be featured on the news. Last Wednesday, Channel 9 news came to Riviera and filmed students in a mockup HIP classroom where students, Sofia Ricci, Sebastian Waverly, and Antonia de Castro, were interviewed on why HIP is of utmost importance to be implemented into schools. HIP President, Maleeha Ismail says that she is “so proud of this year's members for everything they have accomplished!”
In other HIP news, the 2022-2023 school year board members were selected! Congratulations to Jie Tao (President), Manuela Uribe (Vice President), Monica Canas (Secretary), and Amaia Gaubeka (Social Media Coordinator)! After much consideration with applications, these students were selected to represent next year's group.
Incoming juniors are beginning the application and interview process to be selected for next year's group of PHEs! Current PHEs are so excited to see what's in store for next year!
As this year's teaching modules begin to wrap up, we applaud this group of young peer health educators for their time and commitment to the program.

Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Taylor
Ms. Taylor has been at Riviera for three years, and after only being the advisor for the yearbook staff for two years, both pieces of work under her supervision have made it into the National Herff Jones Portfolio. She also teaches Writing Workshop to seventh and eight grade students. Along with her exceptional writing skills, she has an eye for creativity. Riviera’s yearbooks have been nothing but outstanding ever since her arrival. Guiding and directing students on how to capture some of their fondest memories is one of her passions. Ms. Taylor also reintroduced the cheer program at Riviera in 2019. Despite her short time at Riviera, she has greatly impacted her students and continues to foster close relationships with them.

HOSA AWARDS
HOSA is an international student organization that promotes student involvement in various health-related careers. They recently held their yearly competitive event for the 2021-2022 school year. This motivates students to excel and find interest in the various branches of the biomedical sciences. By participating in these activities, Riviera students are given the opportunity to find their passions and innovate new ideas. This year, due to COVID, HOSA had to adapt to the circumstances and go fully virtual. This didn’t hinder our Riviera Biomed Bulldogs from attaining top recognition. Students will now continue on to compete at the state level. Congratulations to all!
