Happy Short Week !
Tomorrow is the kick-off of our Bobcats One Read! The entire school will begin reading A Wrinkle in Time together on Thursday morning during our Advisory block. Then the expectation is that students will make this part of their daily Independent Reading Practice. There are twelve chapters in the book, and students should be able to complete a chapter each day, which will allow for the completion of it by March 7th.
In addition to participating in classroom discussions, lunchtime activities, and optional contests related to the book, students and families may choose to cap off the One Read by attending an exclusive SMMS showing of the movie adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time at our local theater on Saturday, March 10th, at 9:00 a.m. for $8/ticket. More information to come.

Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
Language Arts-
This Week in Language Arts:
In To Kill A Mockingbird , the trial is over, and the verdict has been announced. Unfortunately, it has not turned out the way we had hoped for. What will happen to Tom Robinson and his family? What about Atticus, Scout, and Jem? We will put all of the missing pieces together as we complete the final chapters of this novel.
This week we will take a closer look at the evidence from the trial, and establish which side of the argument had the best defense.
Most groups finished reading The Watson's Go To Birmingham before the break. Today we are finishing up the final testing, and taking a look at the actual news reports from the bombing at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.
The next few weeks will find our writing focus on constructing an Argumentative essay.
This style of writing will be the target piece for our next Assesslet practice that will be coming up in just a few weeks, as well as one of the options presented on the EOG writing day.
Independent Choice Reading Book #3 was due TODAY,Feb. 21st, and Book 4 by March 7th ( A Wrinkle in Time will complete this requirement)
This is week students will NOT be required to work on Tween Tribune . I would like the daily reading focus to be on A Wrinkle in Time. Students should be completing a chapter each day. The "Critical Thinking Questions" posed this week and next will come from the chapter they should be on, so I would encourage them to keep up.
Students who are able to keep up easily may want to do some independent practice on some of the skills they may need some work on at: https://www.quia.com/web
These activities will definitely increase their ability to be successful on the EOG and in life! Please remember, the only way to increase Lexile levels and improve writing scores is through independent practice.
Thanks for your continued support from home!
Science- Mrs. Madera
Physical Science
Last week students took the Waves Mastery Assessment. This Mastery Assessment focused on the application and relationships between wave properties and the way we hear and see things. This has really been stressed in class labs and online simulation assignments, as well as the review assignments conducted the past two weeks. Assessment scores were posted on Power School. Students will be coming home with a printout copy of their scores to be signed and returned. Students will be provided the opportunity to remediate and retest on the standards that they missed. This assessment is worth 10% of their Quarter 3 grade.
Following our Mastery Assessment, we began our new unit on Forces and Motion. This is our most difficult unit this year and requires students to be reviewing each night. There is a great deal of real world application to be found in this unit and students need to be able to demonstrate their understanding of the many relationships in this unit.
This week we will be focusing on Speed. Students will be collecting data, calculating speed using the speed formula (Distance/Time), analyzing the data, and graphing the data. We will be having a quiz on the motion notes and speed calculations/graphs.
Please check google classroom for additional practice links and simulations. Review notes and vocabulary each night.

This week we will finish the New South Era. The following is a glimpse of the upcoming week:
Wednesday- New South Mastery Assessment Review Sheet (The test will be on Friday 2/23)
Thursday- Students will continue working on comparing/contrasting the International Cotton Expositions and the 1996 Olympic Games
Friday- New South Mastery Assessment. Students will receive an Individual Standard Report over the Civil War Mastery Assessment. They will have the opportunity to complete remediation work on US Test Prep for each standard they did not master.
Mr. Frazier
Last week, Team 8-2 Mathematics tested on Unit 4 and Unit 5. Overall, assessment results indicate that the students have a good understanding of the functions and linear relationships. Please continue to encourage your students to stay focused and put forth the same effort that I’ve seen over the past few weeks.
This week, we will complete our Formative Assessment Lesson on interpreting graphs. Thus far, students appear to be grasping the concept. We will delay Unit 6: Linear Models and Tables until after the Formative Assessment Lesson. I will post a study guide in Google Classrooms and assigned practice problems in USA Testprep for those that want to study and practice in advance.
