Technology
Flipgrid
Flipgrid is a website that allows teachers to create "grids" to facilitate video discussions. Each grid is like a message board where teachers can pose questions, called "topics," and their students can post video responses that appear in a tiled grid display. Click here to see an example of a child using Flipgrid to do a book talk.
Storyline Online
The SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Daytime Emmy®-nominated and award-winning children’s literacy website, Storyline Online®, streams videos featuring celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations. Readers include Oprah Winfrey, Chris Pine, Kristen Bell, Rita Moreno, Viola Davis, Jaime Camil, Kevin Costner, Lily Tomlin, Sarah Silverman, Betty White, Wanda Sykes and dozens more.
Virtual Bookshelves
This month we are featuring bookshelves to celebrate Women's History Month and Read Across America. These bookshelves are in no way exhaustive. They are just a small collection of the great read alouds available. Let this just be the beginning of the celebration. Click here to access the virtual bookshelves.
Michigan Learning Channel
The Michigan Learning Channel is a statewide project connecting all Michigan students with high-quality distance learning content via a 24-7 broadcast television channel, streaming service, and robust website with on-demand video and supplemental materials. The channel offers instructional programming for children in grades Pre-K–3rd Grade, adding grade levels and subjects over time. The channel is operated by Detroit Public TV and is a partnership of all six Michigan PBS stations. The channel’s content has been developed in conjunction with Michigan’s educational community, and each station is working closely with local schools to engage teachers, principals, and families in using PBS’ educational content. Click here to watch a video about the Michigan Learning Channel. Click here to access these great resources.
Michigan Electronic Library
Through the Michigan eLibrary (MeL), all citizens in Michigan have free access to the Animals and Social Studies modules in PebbleGo, an ideal database for young learners in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. If you have been a user of this resource in the past, then you will appreciate the new permalink feature within each of the articles, giving direct links to those pages. Additionally, by clicking the Capstone drop down menu at the top of the page, there is an audio tool, which allows you to turn off the hover sounds. If you ever have access issues with PebbleGo or other databases in MeL, be sure to contact us as meldatabaseshelp@mcls.org. If your department or district would like to learn more about this and other FREE eResources in MeL.org, please schedule a FREE MeL training today.
