Art Teacher: Ms. Gerke; Room 109

INTRODUCTION

Hello!

My name is Sara Gerke and I am your childs art teacher for the 2015 school year. I have recently graduated from the University of Houston main campus with a degree in Education and a minor in Studio Art. I have contributed to the community by painting several murals in the area, including one for Helen Hall Library. This year I hope to generate the same passion I have for art from your child.

FIELD TRIP! THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, HOUSTON!

This year your child will have the opportunity of visiting the The museum of fine Arts in Houston. This museum is located at 1001 Bissonnet St, Houston, TX 77005. Here your child will tour two gallery buildings packed with historic pieces of art which reflect a wide range of cultures. Additional to the tour, your child will participate in a workshop that will help him or her better understand the wonders of the world! Details will be sent home with your child as the trip approaches.

CONTEST! HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW AND RODEO!

Our school will be participating in multiple art contests this year, in which your child will have the options to contribute. One of these includes the annual School Art Contest sponsored by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. This contest requires your child to create a piece of art that has a western theme to it. We will be doing this contest in class as a project and I look forward to seeing your child's work!

ART CLUB!

Hello all 4th and 5th graders! Now that you've reached the top of the school, it is your turn to be a part of the Art Club. An application will be sent home within the next week from your teacher that you will need to fill out if you are interested. Know that the meetings will take place every Monday after school from 3:30 to 4:30 and you must have a ride home. Only twenty students are allowed to participate, so hurry in with those applications.

MEDIA WE WILL USE!

This year your child will be given the opportunity to work with a variety of media. Some of these include colored pencil, acrylic paint, watercolor, chalk-pastel, oil-pastel, clay, and scratch board. I ask that on the days that I notify you that your child will be using a permanent medium such as acrylic paint, that you allow your child to wear clothing that can get damaged.
