Panther Post
Oct. 15th - Oct. 20th
Hello Lopez Families,
I love watching our kids put so much effort into something they are passionate about. I have been so proud of our athletes. This also holds true for our other competitors as well. In a couple of weeks we get to see those other groups in action. The band and orchestra kick off their fall concerts and then a little later the orchestra and theater troupe make their magic happen. I love how we have so many things for kids to be a part of. It is, of course, one of the things that separate us from the other schools that are getting so much buzz in the news. Nowhere will you find more opportunities for kids to be a part of, and succeed at something, like Lopez Middle School.
I promise to keep these posts positive 99% of the time but every once in a while, some things just need to be said. I want you to look forward to the Panther Post coming out on Saturday so I will mention the following and then move on. I thank you in advance for listening. These opportunities are free to the students, but they are not free to the schools and districts. As the state keeps cutting money for education, we keep finding it harder and harder to provide these experiences. When we look at how much Texas is spending per student, adjusted for inflation and population, it is 6.3% less than in 2010. The state has also shifted more of that funding onto the backs of the local property owners. Texas' share has dropped from 37.6% to 35%; the federal share has dropped from 16.4% to 9.5% of the total. While their shares dropped, your share, through local property taxes, has risen from 46.1% to 55.5%. Perhaps this wouldn't matter if the overall spending stayed the same or if the whole system was adequately funded, but it's not. As you see Texas students fall behind in monetary support, compared to other states, Texas' newest proposed budget has the state share of education spending decreasing over $3.5 billion over the next two years. Somehow, this level of funding is also supposed to support all the new charter schools popping up, which is another drain to our schools.
When you have a chance, visit and follow, RootEd. People like you are trying to make a difference and do what is right for our neighborhood public schools.

LEAD CONNECTION
Put First Things First
People who do not set priorities may miss important assignments, appointments and get behind on their homework or work responsibilities. If we take care of the most important things first and plan ahead, everything else can fit into our schedule. In our lives, we need to remember to set priorities, be disciplined and follow-through.
Everyone Has genius:
Dear Lopez Families
Celebrating each other achievements is rewarding. Lopez Middle School dedicates a display celebrating student genius. If your child is involved in something outside of school, we would love to celebrate with them and share with others. Please send in a picture of your child participating in the activity and we will add it to our display. Ex. Karate, charity work-volunteering, horseback riding, mountain biking, gymnastics.
Please share your photos by emailing them to Mr. Toback at ftobac@neisd.net or by bringing developed pictures to Lopez Middle School. The pictures can be grayscale or color. They will be displayed inside the school for all to enjoy. (they will not be returned)
