READER'S WORKSHOP
First Grade - This week we continue our work with non-fiction text. We are noticing special features and how they enhance our reading experience. We are also discussing the importance of activating our prior knowledge to help us make sense of information in new text. And using our teacher voice while reading.
Second Grade - Non-fiction reading is underway! This week we are learning different strategies for understanding the texts that we read. If you have any child-centered magazines that you would like to donate to the class (Time for Kids, National Geographic Kids, etc), we would be most appreciative! This provides the students with a great opportunity to choose topics to read based on interest. Research shows that when given the opportunity to choose, students are more likely to be more engaged in learning!
WRITER'S WORKSHOP
Editing and revising is a tough job! But your children are handling it like professionals! We have a class full of non-fiction authors to say the least. At the end of last week they were given a rubric so they could self-assess their own work, which gave them the chance to see where they could make their writing even better. This week I will be working with each student so we can move toward publishing their work.
MATH WORKSHOP
First Grade - This week we are working on several strategies to help us be more fluent mathematicians when adding and subtracting; friends of ten (3&7, 6&4, 2&8...), doubles (2+2, 3+3....10+10 ..) and fact families.
Second Grade - Last week we allowed more time for time in our math unit. This week we will be spending time on money. By the end of our money section, the kiddos will be doing world problems that include money. Again,if you are able, please send a bag of coins in for your students to use during this time. It doesn't need to be much. Whatever you have laying around is great! There is nothing better than for your children to get real hands-on experience!
SOCIAL STUDIES
So if your kiddos haven't told you already, the results of our election are in: the class voted Ben for Class President! We had a great time with our campaigns, and everyone was a great sport during the election. We have since moved on to our study of Festivals. Our first focus is on our history of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving through the way we celebrate Thanksgiving today. We will be learning how to use timelines to show the passing of time from then til now.
