Spring 2018 TEPLAS Results
Spring 2018 TELPAS Results:
Students in Texas who are designated as Limited English Proficient (LEP) were assessed in the Spring for progress in learning the English language using the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS). This assessment system measures proficiency levels in reading, listening, writing, and speaking. TELPAS is administered to all LEP students - including LEP students who do not participate in a bilingual or English as a second language (ESL) program because of parental denial.
To access the results of the Spring 2018 TELPAS:
· Go to the Texas Assessment Data Portal http://texasassessment.com
· Click on FIND MY ACCESS CODE in the purple box.
· The parent/guardian will then be prompted to enter in:
§ Student’s First Name
§ Social Security Number or S-Number (State issued ID Number)
§ Date of Birth
· Use this Access Code to log in and see assessment history for a student.
If you have questions, please contact the Campus Testing Coordinator:

Pioneer Day is just around the corner on Friday, November 16th. This is a big event with lots of fun activities. Our 1st Graders will be participating in a variety of crafts including necklace & toy making, fabric dyeing, quill writing, butter churning, and soap making. Each craft will be set up in a classroom and the children will rotate as groups through each activity throughout the day.
We need LOTS of volunteers for this day! More information about will be coming soon, so be on the lookout!
All volunteers must have background check clearance through PISD. If you haven’t already done so, please complete the application located at: http://www.pisd.edu/about.us/partners.volunteers/volunteer.application.shtml
Veteran's Day Program
Please join the students and staff of Barksdale Elementary for a Flag Raising Ceremony In honor of Veteran’s Day!
Friday, November 9, 2018 9:30 am by the flag pole in front of the school. Chairs will be provided for our honored veterans.
Please see Barksdale's E-News for more information.
A Note from the Nurse
Head Lice
Please make sure to check your child for head lice, throughout the year. If you find lice, your child needs to be treated before returning to school. Please notify Nurse Ericka or your child’s teacher so we can keep an eye on the rest of the class and prevent.
The best treatment is prevention. Educate your children to avoid spread of lice by head-to-head contact, sharing hats, combs, brushes, etc. Please see the attached sheet for more information.
What We're Learning
Language Arts & Social Studies
In language arts, we've been working on spelling words with our Words Their Way program. While reading, students have been identifying the plot of a story by identifying the problem and solution. In writer's workshop, we have been working on writing stories with a good beginning, middle and end.
In grammar we've been focusing on verbs and verb tenses. We are starting to delve into adjectives. We'll be incorporating those adjectives in our writing!
In social studies, students are learning about different landforms and bodies of water. Over the next couple of weeks, we will continue to focus on geography in relation to our neighborhood, city, and country.
Math
In math, we've been learning to add three numbers. We're learning strategies to make that easier like using a number line, making a ten, finding the double, and counting on. We were introduced to those strategies in our last math unit. Now we're using those strategies to help us add three or more numbers.
Science
This week we began a NEW unit over energy, force, and motion! Students will be learning about different types of energy (heat, light, and sound) and how we observe them in real world situations. We have a lot of engaging activities and experiments planned, so stay tuned!
PISD Automated Absence Calling System
Are you receiving telephone calls/emails regarding your child’s absence? It is an automated system that will call/email whenever your child is absent.
This automated call happens even if you:
- contacted your child's teacher
- sent in a written note
- submitted a Student Absence Request
- or called the Child Safe line
Volunteering Info
There are a lot of fun activities at school. Please be sure you
don’t miss out by not being a cleared volunteer. Go to www.pisd.edu/volunteer
to complete the process. The District/school does not email you when you are
cleared. You must go back in to the volunteer website to check your status. It
will say “Your background check has been processed and you are/are not
eligible to volunteer.”
