Sipley School Parent Newsletter
You Make a Difference
Summer Breaaaak! But Wait. A Glance at the Days Ahead.
Summer Vacation is coming up. It seems like not too long ago I was writing the first Parent Newsletter of the year. Here are a few things to know:
- The last day of school is Tuesday, June 6 and it is a full day of school for grades 1 - 6.
- Kindergarten's last day of school is Tuesday, June 6 and the regular schedule still applies (half-day schedule).
- Mrs. Melonides has shared the end of year schedule with our preschool families.
- Friday, June 2, is the STP End of Year Picnic. The long range forecast shows rain on Friday, so stay tuned. Parents who wish to attend, there is a sign up sheet that went out. Parents can only attend if they signed up. Also, remember that young children are not to attend the End of Year Picnic. The attention of adults has to be placed on the Sipley Students as we will have the entire student population on our large playground at once.
- Monday, June 5th is a School Board meeting recognizing students who are receiving awards, such as the Presidential Award, the Superintendent Award, and a few others. Parents of students receiving an award have been invited to attend this event. The School Board meeting will take place at Jefferson Junior High.
- On Tuesday, June 6th, we have a small student recognition at Sipley. For students in grades 3 - 6, we basically recognize the students who received awards on June 5th in front of their peers and there are a few school based awards given out, such as those who participated in Chorus, Band, or have won the school Spelling Bee for their grade. For students in grades K-2, teachers recognize students for various fun things, such a "Mathematician Award." While the awards assembly is aimed at recognizing students in front of their peers, parents may attend, but remember, space is limited in our gymnasium. The K-2 assembly is from 8:45 - 9:45. The 3-6 assembly is from 9:45 - 11:00.
- On Tuesday, June 6th, Sixth Grade parents are encouraged to attend our "Clap Out." Our students in grades K-5 along with our staff line the halls from the 6th grade classrooms to the doors at the circle drive. We CLAP our students out the door, giving our students a warm send off as they leave Sipley School one final time. At the end of that line are also staff who are retiring from Sipley School and leaving Sipley School. Parents are welcome to extend our line and add to the fun. It is an emotional moment for many of our sixth graders. As they walk down the hall, their minds are filled with the memories of their times at Sipley School. On behalf of our staff, we are proud of the accomplishments and the effort that our students have given. We are confident that they will do well not only in 7th grade, but in life.
There is an Early Start Date in 2017-2018
School starts on Wednesday, August 16th! This is earlier than usual. Mark your calendars! Our district calendar is available on the district website.
Parents of returning students should register online. If parents need any information about registering online, contact our office. Go here for online registration - http://www.woodridge68.org/pages/Woodridge68/About_Us/News___Calendar_Resources/Parents/Registration_Information/Returning_Students
All students must be registered by July 25th. For those who didn't register online, they may visit Jefferson Junior High on July 25th to complete the online registration there. Registration is from 1-8:00 on the 25th of July. I expect that class lists will be posted on Monday, July 31st at 4:00.
School Hours in 2017-2018
School hours aren't officially changing in 2017-2018, but we will have greater focus on working from bell to bell. Students will need to be in their seat and ready to learn at 8:20. Students will be expected to be on campus by 8:05 and no later than 8:10.
Because students will be working until the 2:55 bell, expect dismissal to begin shortly after. Consider this as you wait at dismissal for your child. I expect dismissal to begin at about 2:58 from the gym.
Tardies and attendance have been a concern for some students. We are putting structures in place to remedy these concerns in 2017-2018. If tardies and absences accumulate (greater than 5% of missed days), our social worker or principal will be in contact with families to help improve attendance. Please know that I am referring to those with high numbers of tardies (beyond 8 per year) and absences (beyond 8 per year).
