DO YOU KNOW OF A NEW CHARLOTTE FAMILY WITH CHILDREN WHO WOULD ATTEND CCS?
Do you know of a family that has moved to Charlotte and are planning on having kids attend CCS? Spread the word that teams are deep in the placement process for next year. We’d love to have more information about the children joining us for next year.
New families should call or email CCS Administrative Assistant to the Principals, Naomi Strada, 425-6600 or nstrada@cvsdvt.org OR register on our website using this link - New Student Registration Information
SUMMER 2023 CCS CONSTRUCTION PLANS
Summer 2023 construction plans are underway for CCS. Work will primarily focus on the fire suppression system and electrical. The majority of the scope will be external and on the first floor of the building. Our community will notice safety fencing around the front of the building with parking on the west side of the school restricted. We’ll send details when the plans are finalized so our broader community can plan ahead.
ADMINISTRATION UPDATE
Dear Charlotte Families and Caregivers,
Throughout this school year, the intention of this newsletter is to provide celebrations of relationships, accomplishments and achieved milestones. I also highlight obstacles we are facing as a learning community and to ask for help or to provide transparency in how we are navigating the challenge. I am searching for a term that illustrates this point in our school year. Dualism? Megaverse? Isekai? A few highlights of this balance:
- Welcoming in a new cohort of kindergarten students, while preparing to graduate our 8th grade class.
- Instructionally assessing the academic growth of students, while developing curriculum and materials for the coming school year.
- Standing in the snow in May, while students hop out of their cars in shorts.
- Creating an interconnected community, while honoring individualistic traits of all of its members.
- Proactive instruction, developing predictable routines and inclusive classrooms, while responding when there is harm and accepting flexibly when there is an unexpected change.
- Planning the departures for some staff, while hiring new educators for next year.
- Appreciating all of the contribution and brilliance Courtney Krahn brought to our learning community as our Assistant Principal, while opening up the hiring process for a new member of our leadership team.
Through the celebrations and the challenges, I am grateful for the partnerships developed between all caregivers and the educators who work everyday for our children. As we all reflect on this year, and set intentions for the coming school year, please reach out with your thoughts.
With appreciation,
Jen

RAISING HEALTHY KIDS IN A CULTURE OF SUBSTANCE USE - AN EVENT FOR PARENTS
GET YOUR FREE TICKETS AT bphc.link/jessicalaheycvsd
Everywhere we turn, our cultural and social practices have normalized and even glamorized alcohol and substance use. From sporting events to mainstream media to celebrations and gatherings, the casual and “fun” use of substances presents dangerous perceptions for youth, increasing their risk for addiction.
In this important LIVE event, ParentIN presents Jessica Lahey, author of The Addiction Inoculation and New York Times bestseller, The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed and three year NYT biweekly columnist of The Parent-Teacher Conference. Jessica is a national speaker, with years of lived experience as a teacher, addiction expert, recovering alcoholic, and mother, and will share research-backed strategies on how to set up our kids for the best outcomes. We can’t raise our kids in isolation from culture or peer pressure. But Jessica will share practical strategies to raise them with a strong sense of self-efficacy, building their skills and confidence to navigate challenging situations like substance use.
Who is this event for?
Prevention is a community responsibility. This discussion will resonate with any positive youth leader - parent or caregiver, educator, coach, mentor, community leader.
Share this FREE opportunity widely and be sure to register so you’ll receive reminders and event updates leading up to the scheduled event.
Light snacks and childcare for potty-trained children will be provided.
Thank you to our partners at Phoenix Books in Burlington who will be on-site with books for purchase and signing after Jessica’s talk.

You are cordially invited to enter The Charlotte News photo contest — “What Charlotte Means to Me.”
In the inimitable words of the 1971 Rod Stewart song: “Every picture tells a story, don’t it?”
We’d love to see your photo of Charlotte, and to learn about the story behind the picture, since they will undoubtedly be unlike any other. Maybe it’s a photo of a pig or cow or pet? It might be a landscape, like the view from the Charlotte Beach, a covered bridge or a crumbling barn. Or even a pic of your family, or a community gathering. You decide.
Photos should be submitted by email and must be received by Friday June 30. Your entry should be accompanied by an explanation of no more than one or two sentences that describe how your photo expresses what Charlotte means to you (see below).
Our judge is Lee Krohn. You’ve seen many of his photos on covers of The Charlotte News. We’re grateful to him both for judging our photo contest, and also for providing us which such a beautiful and diverse range of photos for the paper. Judging criteria will include composition, image quality, creativity and how well your photo and description capture and express what Charlotte means to you.
We will publish a selection of the winning photos in the July 13 paper and on The Charlotte News website. As if that wasn’t prize enough, several Charlotte residents and a business have donated prizes:
First Prize: A late afternoon Lake Champlain cruise on the Albin 28 trawler “Cloud Nine” for up to four people. To include cocktails and enticing snacks. Offered by Glen Findholt and Frances Foster.
Second Prize: A two-hour Charlotte outing to share photography tips and techniques with Lee Krohn, our contest judge.
Third Prize: A $100 gift certificate for organic vegetables, flowers and herbs produced by Head Over Fields. Redeemable at their farm stand in Charlotte or at the Shelburne Farmers Market.
The fine print: Photos are due by Friday, June 30. They should be submitted by email to Anna Cyr, our production manager, at anna@thecharlottenews.org. Photos should be high resolution, 300 dpi. One entry per person, please. Your entry must include your name, address, phone number and email address (so we can notify you) and a brief description how your photo expresses what Charlotte means to you.
That’s it. Just that simple. So, get out there, get clickin’ and send us your photo of “What Charlotte Means to Me.”
