This Is How We Lakeview

October 2021 Edition: Volume 2

Hello Fall!

Reminder that Tuesday, October 12th is a NO SCHOOL DAY for grades K-8 due to Parent Teacher Conferences. Students will not have new assignments on this day so this would be a good day to work on iReady or any missing assignments. If you would like to set up a conference with your student's team, please reach out to any of the their team teachers and they can set up a conference. All conferences will be virtual.

As our fall sports are coming to a close, open gyms and tryouts for winter sports are coming up. Please make sure that you are signing up on FinalForms so that you are receiving communications about winter sports.

Picture Retakes are October 18th, flyers were given to students to take home this week. This information is also available on the Lakeview Website for families to access. Thank you!

October is National Bullying Prevention Month

Parents, during the month of October your students will have lots of mini-lessons and conversation starters during their PAWtime on Bullying. Please take a few minutes to ask your student what they are discussing during PAWtime. Families play an important role in helping us create a positive school culture at Lakeview. Our goal is that Lakeview Junior High be a place where all students feel safe and a sense of belonging. Here are some resources to help you continue the conversations at home. You can visit Stomp Out Bullying and Stop Bullying for information, resources and support.

🎃News from Mrs. Smith in the Media Center

The October Pick Your Poison book challenge began last Friday! Students will have the opportunity to participate by reading books to complete 1-3 challenge levels or even read one book to join the mini challenge. Please have your child check out October’s book challenge.

Expectations for students who are out on quarantine

If your student needs to quarantine due to being a close contact, please have them reach out to their teachers via email and check their Google Classrooms. Teachers are posting work daily that the students need to be working on while they are home. Along with the assignments, they are posting videos and links to materials that will help them keep up with the class while they are out. Please double check with your student to make sure they are keeping up with their work. If you have any questions on assignment, please reach out to the teachers. The expectation is that students who are out in quarantine are treating those days like virtual work days and are returning to school with their assignments completed.

National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month is September 15th - October 15th

The theme for this year's celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month is “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope.” The theme invites us to celebrate Hispanic Heritage and to reflect on how great our tomorrow can be if we hold onto our resilience and hope. It encourages us to reflect on all of the contributions Hispanics have made in the past, and will continue to make in the future. It is also a reminder that we are stronger together. Starting on September 15th, we have been doing daily announcements about important dates and people to make students more aware of contributions of Hispanic people. Teachers have also been incorporating this month into some of their lessons.

Recent Updates

  • If any families are interested in being a part of our PBIS: Social Justice sub-group, please let Ben Baptist (Lead Assistant Principal) know at ben_baptist@plsd.us, or call him at (614) 830-2281. We would love to have more family involvement with PBIS this year to help us shape our work with our students as we work toward our goal of ensuring that every student feels welcomed and valued in our building.
  • Has your student done something awesome or noteworthy? Do you want to celebrate them and their accomplishments? In future Community Corners, we hope to highlight more of our students through the Student Spotlight feature. We have updated the Family Feedback Form to include an area where you can share the details that you want to highlight about your student. Check it out!

Updates from the Family Feedback Form

We had a concern about vegetarian options in the cafeteria. We are working with food services to see what we can offer our students.

The Lakeview Family Feedback Form

This form will be linked in each Community Corner update, allowing families to offer feedback to the counseling and administrative team regarding social justice, mental health, academic support, friendships/relationships, etc. Counselors and administrators will review the feedback on a weekly basis and send out any updates to concerns/questions in the next Community Corner update.
