Hembree Highlights
August 21, 2020
Note from Mrs. Smith
We did it! We are back and in action. You are starting to get on a routine, bedtimes are becoming a necessity, and the alarm is getting use again. This transition was hard for everyone, so I feel that some thank yous are in order.
Thank you to the staff and teachers for putting work in over the summer, during pre-planning, and in the first week of school. Our teachers and staff put in countless hours of training on Microsoft Teams, teaching virtually, and so much more. Teachers have been coming into the building and pushing through the tears when they have a heavy heart because there are no little faces walking through the halls. They have been carefully creating plans and working through the glitches of technology. Our teachers and staff deserve a huge shout-out because they have made the impossible seem possible.
Thank you to PTA who has been supporting our families and teachers! PTA donated over 200 backpacks to help allow every Hembree Springs student to receive a backpack with their materials for school. They were here with donuts and coffee (individually packaged) for our teachers and staff for the first day of school. The teachers were greeted as they came into the building on day one with a welcoming sign, sweet messages in sidewalk chalk, and a yummy cookie. There was no better way to start the year off right. PTA is working behind the scenes to support our families during this pandemic. Please check out all the information below on the work of PTA and how you can support our community too.
Lastly, THANK YOU! The parents have had such a heavy lift in this process. By day 1 of school 99% of the backpacks and materials were picked up. You did that! You came to the school to make sure that YOUR student had what they needed. Our attendance rate was above 96% day 1 and is steadily improving. You did that! You were there to pull out the device, read that lunch number, and get them into their class meetings. The first week of school for the 2020-2021 school year is in the books. You did that! You were there ensuring that lunch was ready at 11 am so that they could get on that 11:30 am call for their next class. You were there reminding them how to mute their microphones. You put in so many hours making sure that your child(ren) were successful this first week. THANK YOU for all your hard work. We know this is a BIG deal and that we can't be successful without you.
Have a wonderful weekend and thank you!
Stay Strong! Stay Positive! Stay Well!
Sincerely,
AJ Smith

A Message from Our PTA
Dear Hembree Springs Hawks:
The PTA would like to welcome you back to the beginning of another terrific school year! Although we are starting our school year off very differently this year, the PTA is still here to support and facilitate student enrichment, staff support, community connection, and family engagement. There are a few ways you can contribute, and we can't do it without your help.
Consider becoming a member, the cost of which supports local operating and communications costs, and contributes to student advocacy efforts of the Georgia and National PTA. Our membership drive is under way and our goal is to have each and every parent and teacher become a member of our PTA. Membership is $10/parent or guardian, and includes voting rights for PTA elections, electronic directory, as well as national and state discounts.
Also, consider donating a membership to a parent, member of the faculty or staff member! As part of this year’s theme- “Your Voice Matters,” we want to be able to offer as many memberships as possible to our school family. We are one of the first Georgia schools to try membership donations, and were recently awarded a mini-grant for this "best idea" by Georgia's District 10 PTA. Click here to read the "best idea" entries. Stronger membership numbers give us access to additional awards and even more grant opportunities!
Join by August 30th, for a chance to win a back to school basket filled with treats for the whole family ($100 value) includes: Aurora mini golf for four people, an 8” decorated cake from Nothing Bundt Cake, an Auntie Anne’s DIY Pretzel Bucket, and $20 in McAlister’s Deli gift cards!
Additionally, student enrichment, staff support/grants, community connection and family engagement programs are funded through your annual campaign contributions. (Did you know that your donations support the online academic enrichment programs your child uses?) Any amount is welcome and appreciated – without your contributions programs like these cannot continue. HSES PTA is a 501c(3) non-profit organization, and your donation could be doubled – click here to see how to get your company to match your donation to Hembree Springs!!
Donate by October 1st, and you’ll be entered for a chance to win a Kendra Scott jewelry set Ever Rhodium necklace in platinum drusy and Betty Rhodium earrings in platinum.
Please become a member and donate using the link below. https://hembreespringselementary.new.memberhub.store/store
Your time is even more valuable now than before. If you are looking for other ways to contribute we will be rolling out several opportunities in the coming weeks and months.
Virtual Volunteer Outreach:
We know this school year is different, but that doesn’t mean it should be any less fun! Help us make this year awesome by becoming a Virtual Volunteer. The details of our volunteer activities are still being worked out, but here is what we need so far:
- Room Parents - Guidelines, instructions, and suggestions will be sent to you later.
- We need at least one Room Parent for each class.
- You will help to create and coordinate virtual activities and fun packets to send home to students.
- You will also help teachers with communication among parents. This is especially important during virtual learning.
- Book Clubs/ DEAR Readers - students love when parents read to their class!
- A pre-recorded video of a “mystery reader” that teachers can play for the class is a great option.
- Details on other opportunities for book clubs and more coming soon!
- General Volunteers - your help is greatly needed!
- Having volunteers on stand-by helps us fill in the gaps where additional help may be needed.
- We’ll also have many opportunities to volunteer from home as we help teachers sort manipulatives and other goodies for our students.
If you have any ideas on how to put a virtual spin on our fun activities for the students, please let us know - email our Volunteer Coordinator, Ashley Russ, at ashleyjruss@gmail.com.
Interested in learning more about being a volunteer? GREAT! Please email ashleyjruss@gmail.com and we’ll get back to you.
Don’t worry, giving us your info is NOT a commitment to volunteer. We are super excited to speak with you!
Your voice matters, and we want to hear from you. Any level of participation that you are able to offer is greatly appreciated. Our goals are the same, the very best for every child. Please feel free to reach out.
