Copper & Brass Tea Urn or Samovar

George III, 18th Century English

Big image

Simply a Rare Antique Samovar

A large and very impressive antique 18th century English George III tea urn; copper and brass, interior tinned, of a classical ovoid shape with a waisted lid and a brass pineapple finial, handles finishing in an acanthus leaf, on a square reticulated base with lion paw feet.

Unlike the Russian traditional samovar, which is heated inside with a live wood fire, the interior here is fitted with a compartment in which a pre-heated iron bar is inserted to warm the water; this patent was introduced in 1774.
