On The Right Track
Technology design cycle report
INVESTIGATION
Introduction
Identify the problem
If students don't know what they are supposed to do in each classes to get top grades, they will feel helpless and some will just give up on that subject. Some students will do whatever they think will make them get top marks, but might ended up doing the wrong thing and got lower marks that those who didn't even try, which is not fair for those who tried.
When students know clearly about their assessment and how they get graded by the teachers, they will know where to spend their time and energy correctly and wisely; and by spending their time and putting their effort correctly on the right things, they will get top marks.
To prove this is true, I created a chart, based on my memory, to demonstrates all that I know about assessment in each class and the images of my charts are on display (two images below).
Design brief
Design Specification
- be stand alone
- be appropriate in length (not to long or too short)
- for MYP students (audience)
- outline assessment criteria, how each assessment criteria is graded and how and overall grade is calculated
- use a good balance of images and text
- when information and/or images are used from other sources - it must be referenced
The spreadsheet created must:
- include all subject
- include all assessment criteria
- allow for multiple units of work
- calculate averages, when appropriate
- include overall grade
- use different cell colours for different subjects
- include a heading
Testing Methods
My spreadsheet will be tested by Sereirath and Erica, they will use the following criteria to assess it.
- Was the spreadsheet complete with space for all subjects or criteria or all the units?
- Did the spreadsheet have an excellent title?
- Was coloring use effective?
- Did the spreadsheet use formulas?
- Was the layout excellent?
My stand-alone product will be tested by Sereirath and Erica, they will use the following criteria to assess it.
- Was the stand-alone product appropriate for target audience (MYP students)?
- Was there a careful balance between text and image in a stand-alone product?
- Were all the classes covered in the stand-alone?
- Was there a clear introduction?
- Was the color scheme and font choice and lay-out stylish and effective?
Test on my products:
- Name three things you liked about the stand alone presentation.
- List three key facts from the stand alone.
- Name three things that should be changed on the stand alone to make it better.
- Name three things you liked about the spreadsheet.
- Name three things that should be changed so that the spreadsheet is better.
I will conduct the test between the 24th and 26th of September.
Testers: Erica, Sophie, Sereirath, Alpha and Mr. Luke.
Research
To increase my understanding about spreadsheets, I decided to conduct some research on the internet.
SPREADSHEETS
Through research I found out that a spreadsheet is a grid that organizes data into columns and rows. Spreadsheets make it easy to display information and people can insert formulas to work with the data.
"A table of values arranged in rows and columns. Each value can have a predefined relationship to the other values. If you change one value, therefore, you may need to change other values as well
Spreadsheet applications (sometimes referred to simply as spreadsheets) are computer programs that let you create and manipulate spreadsheets electronically. In a spreadsheet application, each value sits in a cell. You can define what type of data is in each cell and how different cells depend on one another. The relationships between cells are called formulas, and the names of the cells are called labels."
Spreadsheets are being used by accountants for hundreds of years already. Computerized or electronic spreadsheets are used recently. Information Systems oral history and some published newspaper and magazine stories celebrate Dan Bricklin as the "father" of the electronic spreadsheet.
Accountants, teachers, engineers, sales people, scientists, super markets and market researchers use spreadsheet to help them with their data that they need to keep track of.
A spreadsheet is better than a calculator or a pen as it can handle data more effectively. When calculating costs using a spreadsheet, a formula can be used and applied uniformly. The information in the spreadsheet can also be presented in many ways making and it also makes it easier to alter as well as save ones work.
There are many different types of spreadsheets, here are some examples:
Two-Dimensional Spreadsheets
Three-Dimensional Spreadsheets
Arithmetic Spreadsheets
Logical Spreadsheets
Object-Oriented Spreadsheets
stand-alone:
Refers to a device that is self-contained, one that does not require any other devices to function. For example, a fax machine is a stand-alone device because it does not require a computer, printer, modem, or other device. A printer, on the other hand, is not a stand-alone device because it requires a computer to feed it data.(Webopedia)
Stand-alone presentations are presentations that don't need other equipments besides itself, it doesn't need people, anyone to talk or explain anything, the stand-alone presentation will explain everything.
Example of stand-alone presentations:
- posters
- videos
- slide shows
- banners
- prezi
- powerpoint
- photos

PART 2:
To increase my understanding about MYP and how each subject is graded I conducted some research and also interviewed my teachers. This is what I discovered...
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is specially designed for the unique needs of children ages eleven to sixteen (grades 6 through 10), at a time when they need to develop exceptional learning habits, self-confidence and a thorough understanding of their academic subjects.I will now explain assessments for each of my subject.
TECHNOLOGY
I conducted my primary research by interviewing my technology teacher- Mr. Luke Watson, and these are the things I got from him:
Maximum marks for each unit/ assessment is 36 ( 6 marks for each criteria. there are 6 criteria ):
A- Investigation 6/6
B- Design 6/6
C- Plan 6/6
D- Create 6/6
E- Evaluate 6/6
F- Attitudes in technology 6/6
MATHEMATICS
I conducted more research on mathematics assessments in MYP, and this is what I found:
Maximum marks for each unit/ assessment is 28 ( 8 marks for two criteria and t 6 marks for the other two criteria ):
A- Knowledge and understanding 8/8
B- Investigating patterns 8/8
C- Communication in mathematics 6/6
D- Reflection in mathematics 6/6
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
I did more research on physical education assessments in MYP, and this is what I found:
Maximum marks for each assessment/ unit is 32, there are 4 criteria in total:
A- Use of knowledge 8/8
B- Movement composition 6/6
C- Performance 10/10
D- Personal engagement 8/8
ARTS
I also also researched about arts assessments for MYP, this is what I found:
Maximum marks for each assessment/ unit is 38, there are 4 criteria in total ( 10 marks for one criteria, and 8 marks each for the other three criteria:
A- Knowledge and understanding 8/8
B- Application 10/10
C- Reflection and evaluation 8/8
D- Personal engagement 8/8
ENGLISH
What I found about English assessments in MYP:
Maximum marks for each unit/ assessment is 30, there are only 3 criteria in total ( 10 marks for every criteria)
