Loupe Lens & iPhone Photography
Get creative in sciences, art & more with a Loupe Lens!
Introduction
Seeing is believing! Engage and raise your pupils interest by allowing them to gather interesting images of a magnified world around them.
Buying A Loupe Lens
Loupe Lenses are cheap, the image quality will never be that great using this method so don't waste money on anything more expensive! I have purchased all of my lenses (I have purchased quite a few to give away to colleagues and pupils!) from sellers on eBay and have never had any issues, but take the usual care and caution when buying from unknown retailers!
The most recent seller I have used is: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-Pocket-LED-UV-Jewellers-Loupe-60x-Microscope-Glass-Jewellery-Magnifier-Z34-/290949265350?pt=UK_BOI_Medical_Lab_Equipment_Lab_Equipment_ET&hash=item43bded77c6
I have never paid more that £3 inc P&P for a lens!
Leaves
See some amazing detail on the surface of leaves. African violets make good subjects for looking at Stomata (their pink / purple underside is the result of cell containing this coloured pigment which is present in all but the guard cells making for their easier viewing). Switch from Loupe Lens and iPhone to microscope to help illustrate scale and size.
TV / Monitor Screen
Illustrate how what we see on a TV screen is made up of varying amounts of different colours blending together (typically RGB!).
Iris
Carful not to stick it in your eye, but some interesting images of the skin, hairs, fingernails, freckles, spots, scabs and other parts of the (already exposed!) body can make for some interesting shots.
Mounting The Lens
Mounting your Loupe Lens couldn't be easier. Just use a small amount of BluTack / WhiteTack around the eyepiece and carefully press this over the camera lens on your phone (just take care not to use too much and obscure the image passing into the camera lens). See the image below:
