FOOD SERVICE REMINDER
ATTENTION FAMILIES AND STAFF
We would like to provide a reminder regarding Free & Reduced Meal applications. Benefits carried over from last school year will end on October 4, 2023. A new application must be completed each year per federal guidelines.
If you have not already completed an application and feel your student may still qualify, please be sure to complete the 2023-24 application for Free & Reduced Meals, which can be found at https://www.ccaschools.org/Page/3870. If you need assistance completing this form, please contact the Nutrition Department at (319) 828-4510.
Unfortunately, benefits cannot be applied retroactively, so any debt incurred prior to applying for free and reduced status is the responsibility of the family.
We are dedicated to ensuring that all students have access to school meals and we will provide the necessary assistance to make that possible. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.
Sincerely,
Missy Ortman
Director of Food & Nutrition

HEALTH SERVICES
ILLNESS GUIDELINES INCLUDING FLU/COVID CONTAGIOUS DISEASES
Please review the following student illness guidelines:
- Report the absence and the student's symptoms (i.e. nausea, vomiting, fever, headache, sore throat, cough, rash, body aches, etc.).
- If the student saw a healthcare provider for the illness, please let us know the outcome of that visit and if your child was diagnosed with a contagious disease.
- For contagious diseases like the flu, COVID, etc., follow the same guidelines: Students/staff must be fever free 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.
- If the student has a fever (100 or higher), they should not return to school until they are fever-free for 24 consecutive hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.
- If the student is vomiting, they should not return to school until they have not vomited for 24 hours.
- If the student is being treated for a contagious bacterial infection (i.e strep throat), they should not return to school until 24 hours after antibiotics are started and until they are fever-free for 24 consecutive hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.
Students with the above symptoms may be sent home. A parent/guardian will be called and asked to come and pick up the student.
Students who wish to participate in school-sponsored activities must attend school one-half day the day of the activity unless permission has been given by the principal for the student to be absent.
It is the responsibility of the parent to notify the student's attendance center as soon as the parent knows the student will not be attending school on that day. The principal may request evidence or written verification of the student's reason for absence.

RECONSIDERATION COMMUNITY MEMBER APPLICATION
The Instructional Materials Reconsideration Committee addresses formal requests for reconsideration of library and instructional materials in the Clear Creek Amana Community School District. The committee provides a context in which differences of opinion and possible selection errors may be examined openly. The main task of the committee is to make a recommendation to the Superintendent when a citizen makes a written complaint against a library book, classroom material, or other instructional resource. District policy, regulations and procedures are considered when studying the challenged materials.
The committee forwards their decision to the Superintendent who, in turn, makes the final decision. Complaints are considered and acted upon within thirty school days of receipt. All meetings are open to the public.
Deadline for the application is Thursday, September 22, 2023 by noon.

ELEMENTARY CURRICULUM INFORMATION
HOW IS MY CHILD DOING AS A READER?
All Iowa elementary school students participate in a reading screening test three times a year to measure their reading abilities. State benchmark scores are provided to determine the level students should be performing in the area of reading according to their grade level.
Students that perform under the benchmark score, receive additional reading instruction during their school day. Teams of teachers design specific lessons based on the reading skills each child needs to improve. Teachers monitor how the student is progressing.
Parents/Guardians of students that qualify for additional reading instruction due to the score achieved on the screening test, will be sent a letter the week of September 27th. Progress Reports will be sent home every 6 weeks to inform parents/guardians.
Click here to see an example of a reading progress report. If you have any questions please contact your student’s teacher at any time.

SCHOOL THERAPISTS NEWS
SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH
In Honor of Suicide Prevention Week (Sept 10-16), we encourage you to reflect on these numbers:
Every day there are 3,703 suicide attempts in our nation and this statistic only includes 9th-12th grade. If this statistic included Middle School students this number would be significantly higher.
Everyday an average of 125 people die by suicide in our nation.
We know suicide is difficult to talk about, but what if “talking” was the first step in saving a life. If you are concerned about someone you know, here are five steps you can take.
We also want to remind you that we have CommUnity Mobile Crisis available in our own communities (Johnson and Iowa Counties). They can provide an immediate resource when things are becoming overwhelming. https://builtbycommunity.org/i-need-help/mobile-crisis/
