The Good News-Sept. 19th
Saint John XXIII Catholic School 2021-2022
Leadership Message
Try like Terry: A Legacy of Hope
On Friday, September 24th St. John XXIII staff and students will continue a part of the story that Terry Fox began in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980. His story and Marathon of Hope will be retold again and again in classrooms and homes this month.
As we approach the 41st anniversary of Terry’s Run, in a time of unsettled waters, we hope you
will take inspiration from Terry’s attitude during the Marathon of Hope – resilient,
determined, hopeful. The road ahead may be unknown and unlike any that we have
ever been on, but together, we will take it one step at a time – just as Terry did. May our children see, hear and experience hope, not only through Terry Fox, but through our models of faith, community, and determination. May they continue to see all of us join together for good.
Blessings,
Mrs. Bonnie-Lynne Boehm

*Important* Families: Please Read and Action: Reporting Absences
A reminder for all families that the AHS Daily Assessment needs to be completed and actioned each morning prior to coming to school. If your child is experiencing symptoms please choose:
- “Flu-like symptoms”
- “other illness or injury” If they are experiencing symptoms that you do not deem to be flu-like, or your child has a medical appointment.
- “parent excused.” If your child is experiencing no symptoms at all, please choose this. The parent excused absence should only be chosen if you are keeping your child home for a reason that does not pertain to a medical issue. (i.e dance competition)
Thank you for your diligence and cooperation with this.

Eating Lunch at St. John XXIII: Growing healthy kids

Thank you for all your help ensuring your child comes to school with a healthy lunch, and several snacks. Nutritious food is important for children's bodies and brains, and will help to set them up for learning success. Please let us know if sending healthy snacks is a challenge for your. We are happy and ready to help. We are your village!
Helping keep students' work and eating spaces clean: Picnic style
You are invited to send your child to school with a clean tea towel or a placemat that they can use as a little picnic space on their table as they eat their lunch. This helps to keep their work and eating spaces a little cleaner.
Nut Aware
Thank you for your helping keeping all nuts and foods that contain nuts at home as we have staff and students with severe nut allergies. Thank you in advance for your help!

*Update & Response from EICS: Provincial State of Public Health Emergency
Dear EICS Catholic School Community,
As announced on September 15, 2021, by Premier Kenney, Alberta has declared a state of public health emergency and will implement new health measures to expand capacity, increase vaccination rates and reduce transmission of COVID-19.
Within Elk Island Catholic Schools (EICS) the move to include these new restrictions which are in effect starting September 16th will be relatively seamless since most of the recommendations were already in place within our schools.
Highlights include:
- Stay-at-home policy for any students/staff exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19
- Daily screening following the Alberta Health Daily Checklist
- All eligible staff and students are encouraged to be fully vaccinated for respiratory illnesses, where applicable, such as COVID-19 and influenza.
- When there is a confirmed case of COVID-19, parents and guardians are encouraged to notify school administrators of a positive COVID-19 test result. All reporting continues to be confidential.
- Staff and students who test positive for COVID-19 are required to isolate for a minimum of 10 days.
- All students and staff in Grades K-12 are required to wear a mask in all common areas, hallways, foyers, lunchrooms, libraries, and in areas where social distancing is not possible. Masks may be removed in classrooms when students are seated.
- Masks are required for all students and staff on school busses.
- Enhanced cleaning protocols and disinfecting will continue.
- All school council meetings that can be done virtually/teleconference moving forward are to be done in this manner.
- In-person parent gatherings are not to occur in our schools during the state of a public health emergency.
