Happy New Year!!!
I hope everyone had a restful and relaxing break and that your students are recharged and ready to return to school. Student Report Cards will be coming home on Thursday, January 10th. Included in the Report Card packet will be results from the end of year test taken in 2018. We were very proud of the results we received from the Alabama State Department of Education for our school and for our school system. Results can be viewed on al.com for all Auburn City Schools.
Next week, we will begin our second round of Scantron Performance Series Testing. These diagnostic tests are taken on an iPad with the classroom teacher. Results are used to help teachers plan instruction for each student. Our state incorporates a growth model into their grading system so this round of tests will give our teachers a good understanding of what we have accomplished since the beginning of the year, and what we still need to work on before the end of this school year.
Please be looking for information coming home soon about our YES Clubs. YES Club Day is a student favorite because students are able to select clubs that match their interests. We will have several new clubs for the second half of the year that we feel will excite our students.
Thank you for your continued support of Yarbrough Elementary.

Nurse Notes from Nurse Julia
Please help us stop the spread of flu by keeping your student home when they are ill.
Flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when someone with flu coughs, sneezes or talks.
These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people nearby. You can also get it by touching something that has flu virus on it and then touching your mouth, eyes, or nose.
People with flu may be able to infect others from 1 day before getting sick to up to 5 to 7 days after. Your child should stay home to rest and to avoid spreading flu to others. Keep your child home for at least 24 hours after their fever is gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.
You can take everyday actions to reduce the chance of getting the flu:
Stay away from people who are sick.
Wash your hands often with soap and water.
Do not touch your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Flu illness can vary from mild to severe.
Always consult your doctor if your child has symptoms of the flu.
Symptoms of the flu:
Onset Sudden, often within hours
Fever Common
Headache Common
Nasal Congestion Common
Dry Cough Common
Chest Pain Common
Muscle Pain Common
Fatigue Common
Duration 3-7 days

Music Moments with Mrs. Oprandy
On December 17th, all Y.E.S. students sang along with the choir on two songs as the choir performed their holiday concert for the entire school. Following the choir concert, students participated in a holiday themed sing-along game, “Finish the Lyrics."
Fourth graders learned more about the staff and how the placement of a note on the staff determines the note name and the pitch of a note. To remember the names of line notes, students learned the pneumonic device “Every Good Bird Does Fine”. To remember the names of space notes, students learned the pneumonic device “FACE”. Students were also introduced to two new rhythmic notations, half note and half rest.
Fifth grade students continued their adventure in learning to play the recorder. They have learned the fingering for notes, B, A, and G, and are ready to begin earning Recorder Karate Belts. To earn a belt, students must perform a song with all correct notes, all correct rhythms, steady beat, and good sound.
Art Adventures with Mr. Daniel
The Y.E.S. Art Dept. has an exciting time planned for January 2019! We are currently working in the following areas:
Our fourth grade artists will be exploring the works of famous artist, Romare Bearden. We will use our creative ability, space, form, color, texture, rhythm, and balance to develop Story-board Collages, based on "A World Inside of A World."
Our fifth grade artists will be exploring the works of famous artist, Man Ray. We will utilize our imagination, line, space, shape, form, color, texture, rhythm, harmony and proportion, to develop Mixed-Media Collages. These collages will be created utilizing a variety of materials as well as rendering techniques.

Welcome to 2019! I hope you have spent time with your children reflecting on the previous year. It is fun to remember the good times and to decide how to change the things we may not have liked so much. Some ideas for goal setting may include: bed times, study time, exercise, eating healthier, having a more positive attitudes, and even having a time to relax.
This is not only a new year, but a new semester as well. Students need to focus on setting new goals. Help your children set realistic goals for both their academic and personal lives. Setting goals helps children raise their self-esteem. Building strong children today only invests in our futures.
In Guidance we will be focusing on goal setting during our first few weeks of January. Take time to ask your children about the goals they have set at school.
