MSE February Newsletter
Sharing stories about the wonderful things happening at MSE
From the Desk of A. Pruitt
The teachers have analyzed last year's TNReady data and this year's benchmark data to drive all of their instruction. Students are receiving personalized instruction, participating in student organized learning environments, practicing citing from the text, and much more. Everyone is working hard to ensure that all students are feeling success and that they are ready to continue their learning journey.
MSE HS has awesome teachers and academic coaches as well as a dedicated counselor and discipline coordinator who are putting in overtime to prepare for the students not only for school but also for life and how to take on daily challenges. I would personally like to give a thank you to our whole school community for doing an outstanding job!
There is not a lot on the calendar for February, so we will be diving hard into the curriculum in preparation for May. As we continue to work hard through February, remember to learn about something or someone new and share your wisdom with the world.

Do you have a favorite book you teach to 9th grade?
- The Hate You Give! This one is a favorite of everyone!

Congratulations to our high school girl's basketball team for making it to the playoffs!
Student Spotlight: Aneth F.
Aneth is a 10th grade scholar recently selected for the REACH Memphis Program
One of the newest members of REACH Memphis is our very own Aneth F! REACH Memphis is one of the most prestigious college-prep programs in Memphis. Helping students for over fifty years, REACH's mission is to offer academic support and personal growth experiences to broaden each student’s understanding of self, leadership and community. They offer services to help high-achieving Shelby County students in high school, college and beyond.
In high school, REACH works with students to improve ACT scores, write college application essays, and partners with colleges outside of Memphis to send students to differentiated summer programs to receive an immersive experience of living and studying on a college campus.
Aneth is most interested in a summer engineering program at Smith's College in Northampton, Massachusetts. The camp is a four week residential program for exceptional young women with strong interests in science, engineering and medicine. Smith College is among the top-rated liberal arts colleges in the United States and one of the nation's largest colleges dedicated solely to the education of women.
When asked if there was a specific teacher at MSE who sparked her interest in science, she immediately answers, "Mr. Shirley!" Aneth says it was sitting in Mr. Shirley's seventh grade class where he, "encouraged us to ask questions in class showed us videos to spark our interest" when her own interest was sparked.
She remembered watching a particular video about prosthetics when she first heard about the field of biomedical engineering. "It was so cool to watch scientists to build something new. Especially when it was made for people who thought they had lost something forever," Aneth said.
Aneth aspires to major in biomedical engineering in college with hopes on maybe one day entering the medical field. As a sophomore who has already scored a 19 on her practice ACTs, we have no doubt Aneth has a bright future ahead of her as a leader in the STEM community.

Robotics Club Builds Programmable Robot
Students learn to build and program robots for competition
At MSE High School, our students are working hard to put their programming skills to the test. Our club is lead by Mr. Dibi, our 11th grade math teacher.
Mr. Dibi started in robotics as the assistant coach for for First Lego League, a competition where students design, build and program LEGO robots. He then mentored our middle school robotics team for three years. After we moved to our new high school campus, Mr. Dibi decided to take our robotics club to the next level for high school students.
Our high school robotics club consists of six students interested in pursuing careers in the STEM fields. The team is a part of First Tech Challenge (FTC), the high school counterpart to the First Lego League. After school, the team works on building a robot that accomplishes given tasks. Once students build the main body and attachments, they will program the robot and control it by using cell phones.
The MSE Robotics Team is new to FTC and they still have a lot to learn! For the 2018-2019 school year, our students are getting the experience they need to be ready for the regional competition held every January in Memphis. They're learning engineering, programming, and metalworking and they must also learn collaboration and team work along the way! We are proud of their hard work so far and can't wait to see where they will go in the regional competition in 2020.
