Volunteers Needed!

The Titus Race for Education is coming up quickly and our class is in need of a few volunteers to prepare flyers for mailing. If you are available next Monday or Tuesday (Sept 29 and 30), I would certainly welcome your help. You could plan to stay for one or two hours depending on your schedule.

If you can join us, please send me an e-mail so I know how many helpers to expect.
Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Box Tops

This is the last week to send in your September box tops! Home and School will begin tallying the totals of Box Tops at the end of the month! Send yours in soon!

In School this Week...

Word Wall

The Word Wall is a great writing tool in our classroom. I do not expect the students to memorize each word wall word, but they do need to be aware that the words are on the wall, so they can use them as a reference when writing in the classroom. For the first few weeks of school, we will be reviewing the word wall words the students learned in Kindergarten.

This week's word wall words are:

love, did, on, has, mom, this, yes, it, up

Shared Reading

In reading this week, we are reading a variety of poems. We will read and discuss the poems The Purple People Eater, A House is a House for Me, and Gobble, Gobble, Munch. Our phonics focus this week will be identifying short i words. We will continue to review the short e sound.. We will discuss our choices for centers this week, and practice reading to self and reading to someone.

We will celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day on Friday, September 26th. We will read many versions of Johnny Appleseed stories and complete a sequencing activity about how apples grow.

Everyday Math

Our unit 1 math tests will be coming home for you to review this week. Please go over the questions with your child, then sign and return the test to school. Your child's math test will reflect the new grading system that will be used in the new CB reporting document. Please let me know if you have any questions about your child's test.

We will begin unit 2 this week. with a discussion about numbers all around us. We will examine important numbers like addresses, phone numbers, television channels, and store prices then discuss how they are helpful to us. We will also practice counting on a number grid and calculating combinations of numbers whose sums equal 10.

For Johnny Appleseed Day, we will be creating a tally chart and bar graph of our favorite apples - red, green, or yellow.

Writing

Fall is here! We will be writing a poem this week using sensory words. Talk with your child at home about things they see, smell, taste, hear, and touch during the autumn season.

In the Computer Lab...

The Titus Home and School association has purchased a one year license for BrainPOP, which is a very interactive online source for virtually every subject and topic associated with our elementary curriculum. We are now able to access BrainPOP, BrainPOPjr, and BrainPOP Español for both home and school.

In First Grade, we use the BrainPOPjr site at http://www.brainpopjr.com/ several times a week. Please visit the site with your children at home and encourage them to tell you about the activities we've completed in school.
