Superintendent's Fun Run
Would anyone be interested in walking the 1-mile walk as part of the Superintendent’s Fun Run Saturday, April 22nd? Registration is currently $15. More info. can be found here. We would like to see if there is a student interest from our Special Education population so they could participate in the walk as well! As we get a better understanding of how many individuals are interested in participating from SS, we can send something out to see if the families and our students would be interested too! Reach out to Brooke Looney if you would like to participate!(cell: 281-743-4986)

IEP CHALLENGE: Will this goal allow student to improve her self-regulation skills?
When the going gets tough for Jasmine, a 12-year-old girl with autism, she gets going. The sixth grader often elopes from class when her teacher transitions from one subject to the next despite having a five-minute warning and access to a visual schedule. Jasmine is usually found under her favorite tree if she makes it that far before a staff member stops her.
The team discusses Jasmine's present levels of academic achievement and functional performance, including her need to improve her self-regulation skills so that she won't feel the need to wander from the classroom. When faced with a transition that causes stress, she only uses a coping strategy in 2 out of 5 situations. Noting this and other data, the team focuses on improving Jasmine's ability to self-regulate in the coming school year.

YOU BE THE JUDGE
Did omitting life skills from post-school transition plan require comp ed?
A teen with a specific learning disability and a speech-language impairment attended a Colorado district's alternative high school. The teen completed a transition interview before her IEP annual review meeting. During the review, the teen indicated that she would need help with money management, paying bills, domestic skills, and locating housing.
Despite the assessment data indicating her challenges, the teen's transition plan didn't contain an independent living skills goal. It noted that the goal wasn't applicable because she was a high-functioning individual. Instead, the plan included career employment and post-school education and training goal regarding her work toward owning her own daycare operation.
The parent expressed concerns about the teen graduating early and the adequacy of her transition plan. Ultimately, no substantive changes were made to the existing plan. The parent filed for due process. The teen graduated at the end of her junior year, earning a 3.5 GPA and a regular high school diploma.
In Colorado, beginning with the first IEP developed at age 15, but no later than the end of ninth grade, an IEP is required to include a transition plan. It must identify "appropriate measurable postsecondary goals based upon age-appropriate transition assessments related to training, education, employment and, where appropriate, independent living skills," as well as the transition services the student needs to reach those goals.
Was the transition plan in IEP for teen graduating early appropriate?
