Join Us in Making Our School a Healthy "CATCH" School
This year, our school has joined thousands of other schools across the country as a CATCH school. "CATCH" stands for "Coordinated Approach To Child Health." CATCH schools are committed to helping kids eat more nutritious foods and get more physical activity. As you know, both are important to their health and wellness today and for years to come.
Helping our children make positive health choices takes the entire school community-teachers, principals, cafeteria staff and parents working together in a coordinated way. I strongly encourage and welcome your support for this program. As a parent, your role in influencing your child to make healthy choices is extremely important.
A key focus of the CATCH Program is to create an environment that makes the healthy choice the easy choice for our students. Throughout the year, we will promote positive health choices through wellness activities, classroom and physical education curricula, and signs around our campus. We hope you will encourage healthy choices at home, too. You will receive CATCH Program news periodically to keep you up to date on what's happening at school and suggestions you can use at home to build more nutritious foods and more physical activity into your child's life.
A major emphasis of CATCH is helping children learn to make healthy food choices. Our school will encourage students to eat only healthy and nutritious snacks during the school day. We will be using the terms "GO," "SLOW" and "WHOA" to help kids know foods they should eat more-or less-of.
GO foods include mostly fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and
lower-fat dairy products. They are lower in fat or sugar and are less processed.
SLOW foods are higher in fat or sugar or are more processed than GO foods.
WHOA foods are highest in fat or sugar or have been highly processed.
(Please see the list of sample foods in each category on the back of this letter.)
Here are other ways we hope you will support the CATCH Program:
Have your child participate in a poster contest. . The message on the poster needs to be about making healthy choices. This can include being a CATCH MVP by moving and staying active, valuing healthy eating and practicing healthy habits. Posters will be made on 12x18 white construction paper. This will be passed out during PE. Students will bring posters to the gym when they are ready to turn them in. At that time, they will be given a ticket to put their name in a drawing. Students will put their ticket in their grade level bin which will be in the gym. Posters will be displayed in the hallways around the school. All posters are due by Jan. 25th and names will be drawn for prizes on announcements on Jan. 26th. If you have any questions, please let one the of the PE teachers know. Thanks for your help in making this a success!
Send only healthy snacks to school for events such as class parties, PTA meetings, concession stands and school stores. It's important that we "walk the talk," not just "talk the talk."
Pack healthy lunches for your child.
Find opportunities for your child to be more active. Consider reducing the time he or she watches TV or plays computer games; take your child on walks or hikes-or to the park to play; or involve him or her in other activities. (And be sure to let the school know your thoughts on how we can help support your child in being more active.)
Be a positive role model. Let your actions speak louder than your words by getting more physical activity and making healthier food and beverage choices.
If you have questions or would like more information about the CATCH Program, please contact Melissa Long or Kim Whitman.

Pre-AP Information for Parents of 5th Grade Students
Parents of fifth grade students who will attend a KISD junior high in 2018-2019 are invited to view a presentation regarding Katy ISD’s Pre-AP and AP Program.
The presentations (English and Spanish) will be located at http://www.katyisd.org/dept/GT/Pages/default.aspx below the Quick Link labeled “Presentations”.
The presentation will provide an overview of the advanced academics in Katy ISD and will address commonly asked questions about student participation in Pre-Advanced Placement courses.
Pre-AP courses (grades 6-10) are designed to prepare students to be successful in Advanced Placement (AP) courses (grades 9-12). AP courses are generally available to juniors and seniors at each of the Katy ISD high schools. AP courses provide students the opportunity to engage in college level studies with the option of taking an AP exam and possibly qualifying for college credit. In addition, research indicates that students who participate in an Advanced Placement course are more likely to complete an undergraduate program, more likely to choose academically challenging majors in college and more likely to pursue an advanced degree. Katy ISD offers Advanced Placement courses in the following disciplines – English, social studies, science, mathematics, languages other than English, computer science, music and art.
For questions about secondary course selection, attend events held at each junior high campus (dates are publicized by the junior high); consult the 2018-2019 Course Catalog; or, contact the junior high counselor.

Texas Independence Day Celebration - March 3rd and 4th
“Texas Independence Day Celebration”—presented by H-E-B—is an annual two-day living history celebration on Saturday and Sunday, March 3 and 4, 2018 on the 293-acre Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site to commemorate when 59 delegates bravely met in 1836 to make a formal declaration of independence from Mexico. After all, there is no better place to celebrate Texas independence than on the very spot “Where Texas Became Texas.”
The free event features live music, food, traditional crafts, musket and cannon firings, Texas A&M University Singing Cadets, the Kids History Zone, “The Birth of a Republic” historical play, Brenham Children’s Chorus, and other commemorative programs. The new museum exhibit titled, “So Others Could Follow: Four Centuries of Maps That Define Texas” will open that weekend. Historical reenactors set up a bonafide 1836 Texas Army camp where visitors can wander freely to learn how the soldiers and their families lived then. Admission fees are waived for the site’s attractions (Independence Hall; Star of the Republic Museum and Barrington Living History Farm) for that weekend celebration. Admission to the grounds, on-site shuttles, and parking are also free. “Texas Independence Day Celebration” is coordinated by the Washington on the Brazos State Park Association. Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site is halfway between Houston and Austin at 23400 Park Road 12, Washington, TX, 77880. Arrival To School
We ask that students arrive to campus between 8:00 a.m. and 8:20 a.m. Because there is no adult supervision before 8:00 a.m. students may not arrive before that time. The morning car rider drop off is one lane, please do not go around cars in front of you to drop off. If you need to come into the building during arrival please use the crosswalk where a staff member will stop traffic for you to safely cross with your child. Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we work together to ensure the safety of our Dragons.
