Virtual Learning Week #7: Audition/Placement Week!

Welcome to WEEK #7 of Virtual Learning!

Coyle Middle School teachers and staff are streamlining our schedules to accommodate the needs of our students and families. Please see the newsletter from Mr. Washington for subject-area schedules and campuswide updates:

We will continue to use a variety of ways to reach our Coyle families. These include:
-Remind 101 ( code: coylemsb

-Charms ( school code: coylemsband student area password: your student ID (add the letter s in front if you have logged in before)

-Skyward (

-Google Classroom (we are using the SPRING semester classes for all students; Percussion will use their specific Percussion classes that have been active)

Assignments & Grades

Continuing this week, ALL assignments will be submitted via Google Classroom. Progress reports lock TODAY (Sunday, May 3rd) and they will be mailed this week. Please remember that the last 2 grading cycles are combined. Zeros in Skyward will remain zeros until students submit assignments in Google Classroom. PARENT TIP: The Google Classroom parent progress report notices may not be as detailed and timely as you would like. Parents, you can download the Google Classroom app on your personal device and log in as any of your children. This will allow you to get alerts throughout the day/week regarding your child's assignments.

Some assignments will still require Smart Music, but they will be officially submitted through Google Classroom as a video. Please continue to login to smart music with this information: ( Username: student school email address; Password: Smartmusic

Virtual Classes

GISD has chosen to use Google Meets for a lot of virtual learning. Students are expected to be professional in every meeting/lesson. Students should make every attempt to attend scheduled Google Meets, as this is often one of the best ways to prepare for upcoming assignments.

Students are expected to practice their AUDITION/PLACEMENT music ALL week and submit no later than THIS FRIDAY. This determines next year's band placement at Coyle MS -OR- your chosen high school. CMS Audition/Placement Rubric

Whether you are in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade, EVERY band student will perform their placement in May. EVERY CHILD HAS A PLACE IN BAND next year, but we need to make sure everyone is in the correct placement for the fall schedule. All audition/placement music is located in Google Classroom under "scanned music".

Current 6th & 7th grade students will be submitting placement VIDEOS in Google Classroom BY THIS FRIDAY, MAY 8TH.

Current 8th grade students will complete this process based on their HIGH SCHOOL assignment. Students will follow the below schedule as indicated by RHS directors. All other students should be checking their High School Band websites for details regarding auditions/placements.

Have a question about this process? Email Mr. Lira or Mrs. McHenry or join us during our office hours any day. We are happy to help!

Instrument Selection Events THIS WEEK!

This is the time of year that we usually hold instrument selection events for incoming 6th graders and other students wanting to join band. Since we are socially-distancing, we have chosen to do VIRTUAL Instrument Selection Events via Google Meets. We created a newsletter for ALL CURRENT 5th Graders (or those wishing to enter band as a 7th/8th grader). This applies to students districtwide, so please share with ANYONE you know that is entering or continuing middle school in the fall:

Coyle students should follow the step-by-step guide below or visit this link to our website:

Our instrument selection events are MONDAY, May 4th or SATURDAY, May 9th. Parents should choose a time using our sign-up genius:

Coyle Band Family News

As many of you are aware, one of our 8th graders, Makenzie V., was involved in an accident last weekend. She is back at home now and we are SO thankful she's doing well. Makenzie, your band family loves you dearly and we wish nothing but the best for you.

Today (Sunday), many Coyle teachers/staff, and countless other friends celebrated Makenzie with a parade. It was so overwhelming to see how many people care about this wonderful family!

Band family, please keep Makenzie, her awesome twin sister Maddison, and the rest of their family in your thoughts and prayers. She has been incredibly positive throughout this time and we are so proud of her!

As parents, we have all been impressed by the work our own children's teachers have done during this time of at-home learning. We are also equally proud of our CMS Band PARENTS who have stepped into this important role at home.

STUDENTS: Be sure to thank your teacher AND your parents this week for all they do. Send your teacher an email or private comment to say thanks. Write a card to your parent or family member who has supported your education. Your kind thoughts and gestures go a long way!

Let's Celebrate our CMS Band MOMS!

We are blessed to have THE BEST moms in the world! Kids, be sure to thank your mom every day, but especially on Sunday, May 10th! Do some extra chores this week, write her a note of thanks, pick some flowers (weeds??) and celebrate all she does for you and your family.

We recommend that our students practice 30 minutes daily to maintain and progress through this time of virtual learning.

Practice Records are now DIGITAL. Students will receive credit for practicing by submitting this form:

Students are urged to submit EVERY time they practice; however, students may submit the week's combined practice time by FRIDAY each week.

Band Fees

We will still be collecting band fees. Statements will be emailed out weekly. At this time, Paypal is the only way to pay. We know that COVID-19 has had a huge impact on some families' financial situation. We completely understand. If a family is in a financial crisis because of the virus, we will hold off on collecting fees. It is important that we take care of the financials, but it is more important for families to take care of themselves. Most of the fees involved items and services that have already been provided. We trust each and every parent and child to pay what they can when they can. The CMS band program is a family and we will conduct ourselves in this manner.

Our new band website is LIVE NOW!

We have been working to update our website for all CMS Band families and inform new families of what to expect for the upcoming school year. Visit to check it out!
