Raymond's Run

By: Toni Bambara

Plot & Theme

"Raymond& Run" plunges its readers immediately into the world of its narrator Hazel, known in her neighborhood as "Squeaky," a young black girl verging on adolescence. We meet Hazel walking down a street in Harlem with her older—but mentally younger— brother. She also does breathing exercises to help her be better runner. She constantly trains for the May Day track meet that comes up the following day.

She changes from being an insecure, arrogant fighter to a respectful, confident girl. The reason she changes is because she watches her brother run his first race and she realizes that he’s a good runner.
