~ WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL, GECKOS! ~ ¡GECKOS, BIENVENIDOS A LA ESCUELA!

What is Synchronous Learning?

Synchronous learning is the kind of learning that happens in real-time. This means that you, your classmates, and your instructor interact in a specific virtual place, through a specific online medium, at a specific time. In other words, it’s not exactly anywhere, anyhow, anytime. Methods of synchronous online learning include video conferencing, teleconferencing, live chatting, and live-streaming lectures.

What is Asynchronous Learning?

Asynchronous learning happens on your schedule. While your teacher will provide materials for reading, lectures for viewing, assignments for completing, and exams for evaluation, you have the ability to access and satisfy these requirements within a flexible time frame. Methods of asynchronous online learning include self-guided lesson modules, streaming video content, virtual libraries, posted lecture notes, and exchanges across discussion boards or social media platforms. (Always follow your teacher's instructional plans! :) )

Superintendente

~ A MESSAGE FROM SMMUSD STUDENT SERVICES REGARDING HOME SCHOOLING ~

It has come to the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s (SMMUSD’S) attention that due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, more parents may opt to homeschool their children this coming school year in a “Private School Setting” and not part of an Independent Study or Distance Learning option offered by SMMUSD. The purpose of this letter is to acknowledge SMMUSD’s responsibility to verify compulsory education for students residing in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s boundaries and to provide resources to aid in informing parents of their legal requirements for students enrolled in private/home schools.

In California, there are several ways that parents educate their children:

SMMUSD currently offers Distance Learning and Independent Study (for 9th-12th grade students only)

Additional options throughout the state include an existing online virtual public school, private school, or public charter school.

      Distance Learning

As it was previously announced that students shall begin the 2020–2021 school year in distance learning, the Parties agreed teachers will implement the elementary, middle and high school distance learning agreements established by the Teaching and Learning Working group. Members of the collaborative group included teachers and administrators from throughout the District and from every grade span.

The agreements include a commitment that teachers will provide live instruction for 230–240 minutes daily, except for the secondary compressed day. Students’ experience with live instruction will vary as “live time” will include whole class and small group instruction, both delivered synchronously and asynchronously, as well as independent work. Classroom teachers will provide specific schedules prior to the first day of school. Additionally, the agreements include a commitment that teachers will communicate weekly what students can expect in the upcoming week. To read more about…

      Independent Study

Independent study is a different way of learning. In independent study, a student is guided by a teacher but usually does not take classes with other students every day. The student works independently. This option is only available in SMMUSD for 9th-12th grade students. The program is located at Malibu High School and Olympic High School.

      Additional Options

Parents who opt to privately educate or “home school” their children must first properly file a Private School Affidavit (PSA) with the CDE (Education Code (EC) Section 33190). The supervisor of attendance or other person designated by the local governing board will then verify that an affidavit was properly filed. By filing an affidavit, the owner/head of the school acknowledges, under penalty of perjury, that the (home) school meets all statutory requirements for a full-time private school, such as keeping a record of attendance, which includes noting all absences of a half day or more, grade reporting, and providing instructional materials.

Parents are not required to report to their school district. However, keeping in mind that the SMMUSD has the responsibility for checking on school-age children not attending school through Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the California Compulsory Education Law. To avoid confusion it is best to inform the district that you intend to home school- privately educate your children and provide proof of school by completing the district’s withdrawal form and have filed an affidavit prior to withdrawing your child from their public school.

It is important to note that the verification required by EC Section 48222 shall not be construed as an evaluation, approval, or endorsement of any private school or course.

For more information, parents may refer to the CDE’s “Schooling at Home” web page located at https://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/ps/homeschool.asp, which includes information about filing the PSA as well as educational resources.
