The challenge involved in providing an excellent educational experience for the many, varied students in our district is a challenge that requires dedication and creativity in the best of times. The year 2020, however, was not the best of times.

This past year required an unusual combination of skills and talents from district leaders. Unexpected circumstances resulted in changes in laws and regulations, and those statewide changes required adaptability, quick problem solving, teamwork, and leadership at the district level.

Navigating through unfamiliar waters became a daily task, complicated by various constituents' differing opinions and desires. These uncertain and sometimes demanding circumstances created challenges for even the most seasoned among us. However, our district's Board of Trustees provided a steady hand.

When we needed them most this year, our trustees came through, charting a course that protected our most vulnerable while ensuring that academic progress could continue for all students. It was a daunting situation, but they navigated to success with unfailing determination.

That is why Uvalde CISD will join school districts throughout Texas to celebrate January as School Board Recognition Month.

Our school board members are volunteers who shoulder critical responsibilities and often make difficult choices for our district, all without pay. Their goal is focused on the future success of the children in our district. Celebrating School Board Recognition Month is one way to say thanks for their commitment and dedication.

School board members are elected to establish the policies that provide the framework for public schools. The Uvalde CISD board is responsible for over 4,000 students, 750 employees, and eight campuses. In Uvalde CISD, the Board consists of seven elected community members with backgrounds in areas such as collegiate administration, health care provider, current/former educators, and more. These individuals bring their personal expertise with a shared vision of excellence for children to their role as Uvalde CISD trustees.

The men and women serving Uvalde CISD are Anabel White, President; Luis Fernandez, Vice President; Rob Fowler, Secretary; Javier Flores, Trustee; Laura Perez, Trustee; Elissa Gonzalez, Trustee; and Cal Lambert, Trustee.

Flores Elementary student, Zoey Collins, has completed two different novels, 'Drama and The Hate U Give'! Soon she plans on giving a book review/book talk with hopes that her peers would enjoy reading the books as well! We are extremely proud of Zoey. Way to shine Zoey!
