From the Principal...
May is also going to be a busy month with the vocal music concert, Family Science Night, Band Extravaganza, and CMS track meet taking place. It can be a stressful time for students and parents if you have children in multiple schools. We hope that you can find time to join us in celebrating student work in areas outside the regular classroom.
As always we are truly thankful for your support of our students and staff at Concordia Middle School!

From the nurse...
I will be retiring at the end of this school year. Jennifer Giersch,RN has been hired for my position as District Nurse and will begin training with me soon. Jennifer brings a wealth of experience in both Emergency and hospital nursing, as well as public health. Many of you may know her from her most recent position as Immunization Nurse at the Cloud County Health Dept.
It has been my pleasure to serve as USD #333 District Nurse for the last 20 years, and I thank you for trusting me with the care of your children while they were at school.
It is bittersweet to be retiring, but I am confident that I am leaving your children (aka 'my kids'), in the very capable care of Jennifer and Nurse Loni at CES. I know these ladies will make an awesome team for our district, and care for your children as much as I have.
1)Just a reminder....when a student needs either prescription or over the counter medication at school, or has a special dietary need, a new form, including Dr. authorization is required each school year!
Parents/guardians may obtain those forms now, if you know this will pertain to your student(s) and have the updated forms completed over those summer appointments for the 2019-2020 school year.
Anyone needing those forms or with questions or concerns may contact their students school nurse.
The new required immunizations are as follows:
Kindergarten and Grade 1 : Hepatitis A--2 doses
Grade 7: Meningococcal --1 dose
Grade 11: Meningococcal--1 dose
Students currently enrolled in USD #333 schools, whose immunization records indicate they will need to have immunizations, prior to the 19'-20' school year will receive a notification letter.
Parents/Guardians with questions or concerns regarding their student(s) current immunization record on file may contact Jayme Peterson,RN District Nurse or Loni Kindel,LPN, CES School Nurse.
3) If your child will be participating in outdoor spring and summer activities, it is important, especially in warmer summer months to be aware of the potential for heat illness. Children generate proportionally more intrinsic heat compared to adults. Their core temperature rises faster when dehydrated, they have smaller organs, and are less efficient at dissipating heat. Fatalities may occur within as little as 20 minutes. Certain medical conditions and medications can contribute to heat illness. Some preventive measures you can do, that will help prevent this condition in children are, having them acclimate to the environment before participation, adequate hydration, and wearing light, loose clothing (cotton). Avoid heat if possible, by limiting practice to early morning or late evening. Check the heat index, at http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/heat/index.stml.
After recovery from heat illness avoid heat exposure for 24-48 hours.
Being aware and following these guidelines will help your child to have a safe and fun summer!
Hutch's Holler
In the fall, the 6th-grade leaders planted over 600 tulip bulbs around the CHS campus. This spring the tulips bloomed and looked wonderful along the 11th street wall. However, the other locations suffered for several reasons. So, we decided to dig up the bulbs in locations that struggled and planted them along the 11th street wall. We are looking forward to a highlighted 11th street wall next spring. All 6th graders and some 5th graders assisted with transplanting over 300 bulbs last week.
In guidance classes, we’ve been discussing conflict and problems solving. We have discussed four steps in problem-solving, using the acronym of STEP.
1. Stop and say the problem without blame.
2. Think of a solution that is fair and respectful.
3. Explore the consequences, good and bad.
4. Pick the best solution which probably means compromise.
Along with classroom guidance lessons, Mr. Hutch does individual counseling and lunch groups. If you would like your child to visit with Mr. Hutch, you can email him at brandt.hutchinson@usd333.com
CMS Staff Member -
Hi, I am Tanya Mossburgh. I am married with two children. My family moved to Concordia when I was in grade school. I graduated from CHS, got married and we moved to Great Bend for a short time.
In 1980 we took the plunge, packed up and moved to Alaska. It became our home for 32 years. In 1990 I started working as a Special Education Para at Palmer Middle School. In 2012 my husband retired and we decided to come back to Concordia. I started working at CMS in the Fall of 2012.
I enjoy seeing students succeed and the smile it puts on their face. The high fives, fist bumps and hugs are great too! It is a pleasure working with the staff and students in the town and school I grew up in.

Radial Symmetry
Mrs. Bogart and Ms. Widen’s classes completed a radial symmetry activity to practice their skills on symmetry, shapes, angles, and patterns. They went over a powerpoint that discussed the difference in radial and linear symmetry. They looked at different examples of radial symmetry in nature and hand made. They then learned origami folds for three different shapes and the students were able to create their radial symmetry projects.
End of the Year
Lost and Found: Any items left in the lost & found will be donated to the thrift store one week after the last day of school.
Office hours: The secretary will remain in the office for a full week after the last day of school. 8am-4:30pm
4th Grade Tours
On April 25th, 6th graders led groups of incoming 4th graders on tours of the building. 6th grade students introduced staff and helped answer questions from our 4th grade friends.
Earth Day Recognition and Geocaching
On Friday, April 26th sixth grade students celebrated Earth Day by cleaning up areas around the school. They also learned about conservation practices to help preserve our Earth for future generations. The other part of the day was spent doing geocaching. Geocaching is a fun and challenging activity using GPS to find hidden canisters. The canisters were hidden around the city park near the middle school. Teams worked together to find the canisters, then completed an Earth Day challenge that was contained inside. Our students and teachers truly enjoyed this activity!
