Happy Friday Everyone! I wanted to share with you some information that you may have already heard about this year’s flu season. Normally the flu season runs from December to March. This year, the flu season has ramped up very quickly particularly in four states Georgia, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Massachusetts. Yes right here! Even more concerning is that the flu vaccine is not as effective as it should be against the strain of the flu that is the cause of the most severe illness. That being said, the flu vaccine is still highly recommended. It is great to hear students telling me that they got their flu shot, and it is not too late! The flu vaccine take approximately two weeks to be fully effective, so you can still be protected before the Holidays!
For more information on the flu, please read the attached links. Also please feel free the call me at (508) 430-7216.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s (MDPH) Immunization Program created a resource entitled Flu Guide for Parents in English, Spanish, and Portuguese for school nurses to disseminate as a part of their efforts. For the most up-to-date information concerning influenza and additional resources, please visit the MDPH flu web site at www.mass.gov/flu or call 617-983-6800.

Morning Music Selection of the Week at HES!
The Classic Christmas Story Ballet
The origin of the Nutcracker, a classic Christmas Story, is a fairy tale ballet in two acts centered on a family’s Christmas Eve celebration. The Russian composer Tchaikovsky set the story to music. It was commissioned by the director of Moscow’s Imperial Theatres in 1891, and premiered a week before Christmas 1892. Since premiering in western countries in the 1940s, this ballet has become perhaps the most popular to be performed around Christmas time. The story is about a young girl’s Christmas Eve. The composer made a selection of eight of the more popular pieces before the ballet’s December 1892 premiere, forming which is known as the Nutcracker Suite. The suite became instantly popular; however the complete ballet did not become really popular as a Christmas performance event until almost 100 years later. The two selections we will hear this week are The March, and the Waltz of the Flowers.
"HARWICH HIGH FIVES" for this week!
- To Mr. Ressler and the combined HES/CES Chorus for their work preparing to perform at Monomoy's town Tree Lighting Ceremonies.
- To the PTO leaders and all the 60+ volunteers (parents, staff, MRHS, MRMS & HES students) who volunteered to make the Holiday Bazaar a memorable experience for all and to all that donated items for our young shoppers!
- Bus 5 Driver Carol Ann Tasha and the HES Bus 5 Students for sponsoring a Harwich senior citizen that they see on their bus ride everyday. They are collecting homemade cards and small gifts for a basket to give to their friend this holiday season.
The Harwich PTO would like to thank the many volunteers who helped out with Saturday's Holiday Bazaar - it takes an army to pull off this event and we so appreciate all of the people who came out to help!! It's especially heartwarming to see parents and teachers and older students all working together to ensure that the children have a great time and feel proud of the gifts they've selected for their loved ones!
Thanks to the 60+ volunteers that helped make the shopping experience for our youngsters a success!
We can't wait to see what what's in those packages!
Even got my face painted today!
