Q&A with Richard Patenaude
1. What's the best part of your job at Austin High?
Getting students to realize their full potential. When students come to us from Middle School many do not realize what they are truly capable of. I love marching band because it pushes students at all levels to work towards a common goal together. I love teaching students that together, you can really achieve anything if you put your mind to it, work together and try your best.
2. If you could change one thing about the band, what would it be?
I would change the weather to be more like California. Sunny and 72 degrees all year round. Maybe a marching field next to the ocean or surrounded by some tall trees.
3. If you were not a band director, what kind of work would you be doing?
I thought about being a regular teacher, but with music, there's a tangible payoff after every performance. I'm a very methodical person, so probably some sort of product designer or engineer.
4. What band, musician or composer has had the most influence on your musical life? Can you explain why?
Growing up in Chicago, I was fortunate enough to attend numerous Chicago Symphony Orchestra concerts. Their brass section is world-renowned and inspired me to become a better trumpet player.
5. What song is at the top of your playlist right now?
I listen to a lot of different types of music including classical and jazz, but overall, the most music I listen to is probably EDM and Pop while I go running. It keeps me motivated to work harder. Occasionally, I'll listen to podcasts when I really need the time to fly by.
