Week at a Glance
Marian Central Catholic High School Faculty Newsletter
January 12, 2019
Just think, beginning Second Semester means that we are just past the halfway mark for this school year! The year will go by quickly, so hold on tight!
Thank you for working with guidance to ensure that the missing exams are being completed. We only have a few more students who need to close out the semester. In the meantime, the portal has been open, which means any grade changes you need to do now, you will need to submit using the grade change form found in the exam procedures packet.
Although the senior overnight retreat got cancelled for this week, the Junior Kairos went off without a hitch. As I watched the closing and heard some of the experiences our retreatants had, it made me confident that what we do here at Marian continues to be a huge inpact on our students' lives. Thank you for encouraging our students in their academics as well as their spiritual life, for this is our primary mission.
Finally, many of our theater students traveled to Champaign, IL at the end of this week to participate in Theaterfest. As the current snow storm moves from the southwest to northeast, Administration has been in close contact with the chaparones and they are now planning to leave a bit earlier than expected to ensure safe travels. Please pray that everyone comes back safely.
Looking ahead...
This coming week will begin with an all school mass.
Tuesday is our monthly Late Start, and as we are on the down swing of the school year, we are providing PLCs the complete 2 hours to continue their work on Year Long Plans, aligning curriculum, and developing UBDs. Click here for the agenda and links to necessary templates. For those who have recently joined our faculty, here are some reminders about Late Start days...
- Purpose of Late Start: To provide time for the staff to receive professional development and work collaboratively with instructional teams. This time will more specifically serve to reinforce curricular content, introduce new teaching strategies, and support educators’ adjustment to new technology or legislation that might affect their teaching; as well as supporting any new teachers.
- Faculty should be in attendance at or before 7:30 a.m. through 9:30 a.m. working with PLC (department) members in team classroom
- Faculty should be greeting students outside their classrooms prior to first period, with classes beginning at 9:45 a.m.
Some other things to keep in mind...
- Book Drive all week for Lurie's Children's Hospital!
- Conversations that Matter on Vaping & E-Cigarettes, Tuesday, Jan. 15 @ 7pm. Consider attending this informational session to understand the addictive behavior of youth who use these substances. (See more information below)
- Wrestling Senior Night, Wednesday, Jan. 16 @ 5pm
- Students & Chaparones participating in the March for Life in Washington, DC will be leaving Wednesday after school and returning Monday (MLK B-Day). Please treat this absence as a retreat.
- Senior second semester exam exemptions: Please click here to review the expectations of this privilage so you can answer any questions a senior might have on their ability to qualify within your class.
Have a wonderful week...
NCEA 2019 Convention in Chicago!
Because this is one of the four inservice days, you will be required to attend. When the date gets closer, we will be providing you information on how to check in at the convention. Please take some time beforehand to review the variety of sessions available here. More information will be forthcoming.
DUAL CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES~
The academic expectations you set in your classroom are already so high... did you ever think that they might be to the level of McHenry County College (MCC) expectations?
The minimum qualifications for a high school teacher to teach a dual credit course have changed. According to the Illinois Dual Credit Quality Act, a high school instructor now just needs a minimum of a Master’s Degree with 18 graduate hours appropriate to the academic field of study or discipline in which they are teaching. For example, if a teacher has a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction or Secondary Education, and has at least 18 graduate credit hours in their subject area (ie: Biology) this teacher would qualify to teach Bio157 - Fundimentals of Biology as a dual credit class in conjunction with MCC.
Are you qualified?
Are you interested in finding out more about this? Click here to review in more detail what the Dual Credit program is all about.
If interested in seeing what the program might look like for your courses here at Marian, please contact Ms. Novy to discuss this great opportunity for you and, especially, for our students!
