Tips to Complete your Residency Determination Service
All students who apply to any North Carolina public, private, or community college are required to complete the NC Residency Determination Interview.
- Make sure you have a CFNC account and know how to access it
- Take your time answering the questions
- It's a good idea to complete the RDS and FAFSA at the same time with your parents/guardians because you'll need their information on both!
- If you make a mistake, you will need to complete a reconsideration
- Students can complete only three reconsiderations in a 90-day period
- Write down your Residency Certification Number in a safe place
- Know what your status is after you've completed the online interview
If you have any questions, contact your Crosby Scholars Senior Advisor or call our office.

Alumni Spotlight - "It Takes a Village" NCSU Blog Post
Who do you rely on when you're stressed and overloaded with school work? Who is your village? Do you recognize when it's time to ask for help?
Crosby Scholars Alumni, Amari, is a student at North Carolina State University in the Goodnight Scholars Program. She wrote a blog post for the school to share about how she manages stress and leans on her village to get her through the rough patches. While home is where the heart is, Amari has found her home at NC State to give and receive help when its needed and even necessary.

Don't Fall for the Financial Aid Myths!
"My parents make too much money, so I won't qualify for aid."
There is no income cut-off to qualify for federal student aid. Many factors besides income are taken into account. Your eligibility is determined by a mathematical formula, not by your parents' income alone. Don't forget: when you fill out the FAFSA, you are also automatically applying for funds from your state and possibly from your school as well. Some schools won't even consider you for scholarships if you don't complete the FAFSA.
"Only students with good grades get financial aid"
Most of the federal student aid programs do not take the student's grades into consideration. High GPA and good grades may help with academic scholarships.
"My ethnicity or age makes me ineligible for federal student aid."
The basic eligibility requirements can be found at StudentAid.gov/eligibility, but ethnicity and age are not part of the requirements.
"I support myself, so I don't have to include parent info on the FAFSA."
It is likely that you are still considered dependent even if you support yourself and pay your own taxes. If you are independent, you won't need to include your parents' information, but if your parents list you as a dependent on their taxes, you DO need to include their information on your FAFSA. You can preview the dependency questions at StudentAid.gov/dependency
This information is from a fact sheet that can be found at StudentAid.gov/resources
