Letter from the Principal
Dear Lions Park Families,
I hope you and your families enjoyed the Thansgiving holiday and some extra time to spend doing things you enjoy together. We are glad to be back at Lions Park and are looking forward to this festive month leading up to winter break. We are particularly excited for the holiday concerts performed by all students in second, third and fourth grades and chorus students in third-fifth grades. Fifth graders who are not in chorus will all perform in the fifth grade musical in February.
Our schools' Library Resource Centers utilize an online library management system called Destiny Discover. This system is accessible to our students and families, allowing them to view all books available in our school libraries. Students can access Destiny Discover through their Classlink LaunchPad from anywhere and explore the catalog to find books of interest. Additionally, Destiny offers an option for students to place a "hold" on a book they would like to check out from the library. This short video shows how to use Destiny Discover.
Classroom collections are another great source of books for our students, and teachers are well-equipped to make recommendations based on students’ interests and Lexile (reading) levels. Classroom collections are not cataloged like our libraries, so families that prefer to make reading decisions on their own may choose to take advantage of Destiny to only check out books from the LRC.
We had our first snowfall on a non-school day, but we will likely have more snow again soon. Because Lions Park School has a small amount of land and is surrounded by homes and park district property, we have limited space for drop off and pick up. Our typical issues are compounded when snow makes the streets around the school even more narrow and difficult to traverse. Our staff work hard to ensure student safety by providing safe crossing at Council and School and Council and Elm. We also have two staff members in the staff parking lot (one near the entrance and one near Door 9) and one who ensures safe crossing at the bus turnaround exit on School Street.
In addition to the efforts of our staff, we need cooperation from all parents and caregivers. We appreciate you being mindful of where you park or stop to drop off your children. You may not leave your car on Council between School and Elm or anywhere in the parking lot that is not a designated spot with painted lines on both sides. You also may not block the handicapped parking spaces. Please try to think about if your car location is going to create a hazard or disruption to traffic. If where you are stopped is blocking the movement of other cars, it can then cause other drivers to drive erratically to get around you and then pose a safety risk to students and their families. Safety at drop off and pick up is a shared responsibility of all in our school community. If there are things you believe I can do to improve the situation, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

Warmly,
Katie Kelly
